FERRUM, Va. – The Hampden-Sydney College soccer team continued to stretch its unbeaten streak to 19 games, dating back to the 2019 season, with a 1-0 shutout over Ferrum College on the road. The Tigers are now 6-0 on the season and 6-0 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action. The Panthers fall to 3-2 overall and 3-2 in the ODAC.
Freshman Declan Shaw/Raleigh, NC scored the lone goal for the Tigers off an assist from classmate John Alexander/Wake Forest, NC at 86:38. It marked the second straight game for the Alexander to Shaw game-winner after H-SC won by an identical 1-0 over Lynchburg on March 20 in Lynchburg.
Both teams played a scoreless first half with the Tigers taking eight shots to Ferrum's four. It then appeared the teams were going to end regulation without anyone finding the back of the net. However, Hampden-Sydney found themselves in a man-up situation for just over the last 16 minutes of the game. Ferrum was able to keep the Tigers off the scoreboard until Alexander's pass to Shaw in the 87' minute for the goal.
Senior Gray Sutter/Clinton, NC made six saves, playing all 90 minutes in goal, and earned his sixth win of the season.
H-SC will return home on Sunday, March 28 when they host Eastern Mennonite University. Prior to kickoff, the Tigers will honor its senior class with a special ceremony. The game with the Royals gets underway at 6 p.m. from Hellmuth-Gibson Field.
