HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Senior captain

each had two RBIs to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 15-2 non-conference baseball victory past Mary Baldwin University on Tuesday on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Sophomore
Justin Woodall/Mechanicsville earned the pitching triumph for the host Tigers (5-4) against the visiting Fighting Squirrels (0-3) in a contest called in the middle of the seventh inning due to darkness.
H-SC had 15 runs on 13 hits with no errors … scoring one run in the second inning, three runs in the third, nine runs in the fifth and two runs in the sixth. MBU had two runs on four hits with four errors … scoring both runs in the first inning.
In the second, Beavers (1-3, 2 RBIs) provided an RBI ground ball that scored junior
Trey Karnes/Mechanicsville (3-3, RBI), who had three hits in the game, but had been hit by a pitch to open the at-bat. In the third, Burnette (2-4, 2 RBIs) and junior
Ethan Badin/Richmond (2-3) each singled and stole second base before both crossed the plate courtesy of wild pitches. Karnes added a run-scoring single to center field that scored Clawson (1-3, 2 RBIs), who had been hit by a pitch.
In the nine-run fifth, Burnette and Clawson each had two-run singles during the at-bat, while junior
Mark Evans/Yorktown (1-3, RBI) and Beavers each contributed run-scoring singles, and junior
Max Lipscomb/Virginia Beach (1-3, RBI) added an RBI, as well. Scoring runs during the big inning were Karnes (single), Beavers, Evans, Lipscomb, senior captain
Nick Grohowski/Chesterfield (0-2), Burnette, Badin (single), Clawson and Karnes (single) again. Lipscomb reached on a fielding error and Grohowski walked.
In the sixth, Franks-Pollock (1-1, 2 RBIs) provided a two-out, two-run, pinch-hit double to left center field that plated both Lipscomb and freshman
Cameron Shields/Scottsville (0-0), who had singled and walked, respectively.
Woodall (1-0) started and pitched the first 5.1 innings, scattering four hits and two runs, both earned, with a career-high six strikeouts and two walks. Freshman
Aidan Williams/Suffolk tossed two-thirds of an inning, yielding no hits and no runs with two strikeouts and no walks. Freshman
Ethan Snyder/Bumpass pitched the final scoreless inning, yielding no hits with three strikeouts and one walk while making his collegiate debut.
H-SC is scheduled for ODAC competition this weekend, traveling to play a doubleheader on the road at Roanoke College on Saturday, March 20, beginning at 12 p.m. in Salem.
