SALEM, Va. – Senior
Matt Muehleck/Martinsville had two RBIs in the first game, while sophomore captain
Ryan Boyce/Suffolk and freshman
Lucas Burnette/Hurt each had three hits in game one, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (
ODAC) baseball doubleheader on the road at Roanoke College on Saturday in Salem. Junior
Trenton Tiller/Powhatan took the pitching setback in the 13-5 opener, while classmate
Trey Karnes/Mechanicsville had two hits in the second game, and junior
Nic Graziano/Virginia Beach took the pitching setback in the 9-1 nightcap for the visiting Tigers (5-6, 2-4) against the host Maroons (9-4, 3-1).
In
game one, H-SC scored five runs on 12 hits … scoring two runs in the second inning and one run each in the third, eighth and ninth innings. RC scored 13 runs on 18 hits … scoring one run in the third inning, two runs in the fourth, six runs in the fifth, along with two runs each in the seventh and eighth innings.
In the second, Boyce (3-5, RBI) and junior
Mark Evans/Yorktown (1-4) each singled and later scored on an RBI single to right field by
Muehleck (2-4, 2 RBIs) that included an error. In the third,
Burnette (3-5) singled with one out and crossed the plate on an RBI double down the right field line by Boyce.
In the eighth,
Karnes (0-4) was hit by a pitch to open the at-bat and scored on a two-out, run-scoring single to right field by
Muehleck. In the ninth, junior
Ethan Badin/Richmond (1-4) drew a walk as the lead-off batter and later crossed the plate on an RBI single to center field by senior captain
Ryan Clawson/Moseley (2-4, RBI).
Tiller (0-2) started and pitched the first 5.0 innings, allowing 11 hits and nine runs, eight earned, with six strikeouts and no walks. Freshman
Allan Williamson/Midlothian pitched 1.0 scoreless inning, yielding one hit with no strikeouts, no walks and a hit batter. Classmate
Ethan Snyder/Bumpass pitched 1.0 inning, allowing three hits and two runs, both earned, with no strikeouts and no walks. Freshman
Bennett Lloyd/Henrico made his collegiate debut with 1.0 inning, allowing three hits and two runs, both earned, with two strikeouts, no walks and a hit batter, as well.
In
game two, H-SC scored one run on five hits … scoring the lone run each in the second inning. RC scored nine runs on 11 hits … scoring two runs in the third inning, three runs in the fifth, and two more runs each in the seventh and eighth innings.
In the second, Boyce (1-4) single and later scored when Evans (0-4, RBI) reached base courtesy of an error.
Karnes (2-4) had two hits in the nightcap for the visitors.
Graziano (2-2) started and pitched the first 4.0 innings, allowing six hits and five runs, all earned, with two strikeouts and two walks. Freshman
Aidan Williams/Suffolk pitched 1.0 scoreless inning, yielding one hit with one strikeout, no walks and a hit batter. Sophomore
Owen Tappy/Charlotte, NC pitched 2.0 innings, allowing two hits and two runs, both earned, with three strikeouts and no walks. Junior
Kieran Conway/Chesapeake pitched 1.0 inning, allowing two hits and two runs, both earned, with one strikeout and no walks.
H-SC is scheduled to play at home against
ODAC member Virginia Wesleyan University on Wednesday, March 24, at 4 p.m. at the Ty Cobb Ballpark –
Wurdeman Stadium.
