The visiting Tigers are 4-0 overall, and enjoying their first 4-0 start to a season since 2005-06 (11-0), while the host Panthers are 4-1 overall. Head Coach Caleb Kimbrough
H-SC is led by the third-year head coach who took over the program on April 4, 2019. The former head coach at Huntingdon College (AL) from 2016-19, Kimbrough is the 19th head coach in the 112-year history of the storied Hampden-Sydney program. He is no stranger to the ODAC, having played four years at Guilford College (NC) and coached six years with the Quakers, and one year at Washington and Lee University. Caleb is 20-17 overall at the College, including 9-11 in ODAC games.
The Series
H-SC leads the overall series between the two schools at
7-3, though FC has won three of four since joining the ODAC prior to the 2018-19 season, including a
70-63 home win in the lone meeting last season on February 2 in Ferrum.
Scouting Hampden-Sydney
The Tigers have opened the season with four-straight non-conference victories, including
86-72 past Greensboro (NC) on Nov. 5 in Fleet Gym,
69-56 at Averett on Nov. 10 in Danville,
100-70 at Southern Virginia on Nov. 17 in Buena Vista and
99-60 past St. Mary's (MD) on Nov. 23. The Tigers have four players averaging in double figures among eight scoring at least 8.0 points per game through four contests. Fifth-year forward and team captain
Jake Hahn (Ruckersville) (7-9 3FGs) has led the team with his 16.3 points off the bench, while sophomore guard
DJ Wright (Greensboro, GA) (10 3FGs) adds 12.7 points, classmate and guard
Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC) (9 3FGs) contributes 12.0 points, and sophomore guard/forward
Josiah Hardy (Ashburn) averages 10.3 points. H-SC is shooting an impressive 52% (129-250) from the field, including 46% (45-97) on three-point field goals, and 72% (51-71) at the free throw line. The Tigers are averaging 88.5 points, and allowing 64.5 points.
Scouting Ferrum
The Panthers are coached by fifth-year head coach Tyler Sanborn, a former assistant coach at H-SC (2012-17). Coach Sanborn and Coach Kimbrough were teammates at Guilford for two seasons (2006-08). FC has won four of five games to start the season, including a 76-72 road win at Methodist (NC) on Nov. 28 in its most recent contest. The Panthers have been led by Kajuan Madden-McAfee (17.4 points, 17 3FGs) and Darius Kemp (14.6 points, 7 3FGs). FC shoots 43% (144-336) from the field, including 35% (55-158) on three-pointers, and 68% (47-69) at the line; averaging 78.0 points, and allowing 71.8 points.
Mr. Consistent
Jake Hahn has played in three games off the bench this season, averaging a team-best 16.3 points and 6.3 rebounds. The southpaw has been outstanding shooting the ball, making 20-33 (61%) attempts from the field, including 7-9 (78%) on three-pointers. He scored a season-high 21 points in 21 minutes against St. Mary's (MD) on Nov. 23. Hahn is a two-time All-ODAC honoree (2019-20, 2021).
Welcome To College Basketball
Playing in just his second collegiate game, sophomore guard
Alex Elliott (Marietta, GA) finished with career-highs of 18 points and five steals against Greensboro (NC) on Nov. 5. The southpaw played 26 minutes off the bench and was 6-11 from the floor, including 4-7 on three-pointers, adding six rebounds.
That Was Impressive I
Adam Brazil scored a career-high 23 points at Averett on Nov. 10, making a very efficient 6-9 field goals, including 5-7 on three-pointers, and 6-6 free throws, adding three rebounds, three assists and three steals with no turnovers in 36 minutes.
That Was Impressive II
DJ Wright scored a season-high 19 points against St. Mary's (MD) on Nov. 23, making 5-11 three-pointers, including four treys during a quick two-minute and 32-second span midway through the second half.
