ASHLAND, Va. – The Hampden-Sydney College swim team knocked off Randolph-Macon, 177-40, Friday evening in Ashland. The win marked the first win for the Tigers in the series that started back in 2011. With the victory, H-SC improved to 3-0 in duals this season while the Yellow Jackets fell to 1-4.
The Tigers won 12 of the 14 events en route to the win.
H-SC opened the evening taking the top two times in the 200 Yard Medley Relay. Freshman Quinn Hardimon (Alexandria), senior Woody Parsons (Virginia Beach), senior Ben Hiter (Mineral), and sophomore Patrick Duffy (Charlotte, NC) touched first in 1:50.47. The team of freshman Brandon Hyde (Thousand Oaks, CA), senior Dane Warner (Norfolk), and freshmen Charles Adams (Mechanicsville) and Matt Brooks (Springfield) finished second in 1:53.97.
Junior Patrick Garifo (New London, NC) won the 1000 Yard Freestyle in a time of 13:34.09 for his first individual event win of his career. In the 200 Yard Freestyle, Hardimon beat out a Yellow Jacket by nearly eight seconds in a time of 1:51.99 to win. He followed that up with a win in the 100 Yard Backstroke in 1:00.31 with Hyde taking second in 1:01.43.
The 100 Yard Breaststroke saw Warner winning in a time of 1:09.49. Parsons won his first individual event of the night in the 200 Yard Butterfly in 2:07.17. The Tigers finished one, two in the 50 Yard Freestyle with Hiter finishing first in :25.50, and freshman Carson Mann (Matthews, NC) second in 29.65.
Duffy and senior Jason Covaney (Williamsburg) finished as the top two in the 100 Yard Freestyle in times of :54.36 and :54.60, respectively. Senior Andrew Rehak (Radford) finished first in the 200 Yard Backstroke with a time of 2:15.19, while Hyde touched second in 2:16.03.
In the 100 Yard Butterfly, Parsons and Covaney finished as the top two with times of :56.23 and 1:00.78 respectively. The 100 Yard IM saw Rehak finish first in 1:00.47. In the last event of the evening, the Tigers were the top two finishers again with Parsons, Covaney, Rehak, and Hardimon winning the 800 Yard Freestyle Relay in 8:04.15. Duffy, Garifo, Adams, and Hyde finished second in 9:02.27.
H-SC will return to the pool on Saturday, December 4 when it travels to Sweet Briar to take on Southern Virginia University. The dual with the Knights gets underway at 1 p.m. in Amherst.
