HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – The Hampden-Sydney College soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to nationally-ranked No. 1 Washington and Lee University on Saturday at Hellmuth-Gibson Field. The visiting Generals scored twice in the second half to earn the win. The Tigers are now 4-5-1 overall and 1-3 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC). Washington and Lee improved to 10-0-1 overall and 4-0 in the ODAC.
Neither team was able to score in the first 45 minutes of play. Senior goalie
Ian Fitzgerald (Newport News) made 10 saves in the first half with the Generals taking 20 shots.
Washington and Lee broke the scoreless tie with a goal to open the second half at 50:32. Just under 17 minutes later the Generals scored a second goal off a corner kick to provide for the final 2-0 margin.
Fitzgerald played all 90 minutes in goal while making 15 total saves in the contest.
H-SC will next play on the road when it travels to Virginia Wesleyan University on Wednesday, October 13. The ODAC game with the Marlins is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Virginia Beach.
