Hampden-Sydney Secures ODAC Tournament Berth With 1-0 Road Win At Eastern Mennonite

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Freshman Jack Delaney (Virginia Beach) scored the game-winning goal at 101:20 in the 2nd overtime period to help the Hampden-Sydney College soccer team to an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) road win at Eastern Mennonite University, 1-0, in Harrisonburg on Tuesday evening. With the win, and a loss by Bridgewater College earlier in the evening, H-SC secures the No. 8 seed in the upcoming ODAC Tournament.

"Resilient effort by the team tonight," said fifth-year head coach Tommy DiNuzzo. "We knew we needed to get a win and finally we got the goal we needed in double OT. Jack and every single player on the roster contributed positively tonight."

The Tigers and Royals played through 90 minutes of regulation with neither team finding the back of the net. H-SC outshot EMU in regulation 20-12, while also leading in corner kicks 7-6. The game headed to sudden-victory overtime tied at 0-0.

In the first overtime, it was the Royals who took three shots to just one for the Tigers. However once again neither team was able to score, so the contest went to a second, and final, overtime period.

Just one minute and 20 seconds into the second overtime, Delaney fired a shot off an assist from sophomore Stefan Ngoh (Goldvein) to the left side of the goal and gave H-SC the 1-0 victory.

Senior keeper Ian Fitzgerald (Newport News) played all 101:20 in goal while making four saves in his second shutout win of the season. The Tigers have won three-straight over the Royals.

H-SC will travel for the quarterfinals of the ODAC Tournament on Saturday, October 30, to plat at nationally-ranked No. 1 and top-seeded Washington and Lee University. The game with the Generals gets underway at 1 p.m. from Alston Parker Watt Field in Lexington.
