Hampden-Sydney Concludes 2021 Season With 1-0 Loss To No. 1 Washington and Lee In ODAC Quarterfinals

LEXINGTON, Va. – Hampden-Sydney College dropped a heartbreaker in the quarterfinals of the 2021 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Men's Soccer Tournament to nationally-ranked No. 1 and top-seeded Washington and Lee University on Saturday afternoon, 1-0, at Watt Field in Lexington.

"Great effort by the team today," said fifth-year head coach Tommy DiNuzzo, "We were unfortunate with a couples shots off the post and cross bar. We're proud of the guys though and are already looking ahead to next season."

Neither team could find the back of the net in the first half, despite Washington and Lee taking seven shots, six on goal, and the Tigers taking four, one on goal. Senior keeper Ian Fitzgerald (Newport News) made two saves in the opening half, with the other General shots being blocked. The lone save for W&L came at 12:25, when Matt Semcesen saved a penalty kick by junior Michael Ogenyi (Virginia Beach).

Washington and Lee began the final 45 minutes with a flurry of shots as the hosts took six attempts in less than three minutes to start the second half. Adrian Zimmerman broke through the scoreless game at 56:29, off an assist from Michael Kutsanzira to put the Generals up 1-0. The Tiger took six shots the remainder of the contest, but W&L prevented the visitors from scoring to preserve the one-goal victory.

Fitzgerald made four saves against Generals while playing all 90 minutes in goal.

H-SC concludes its 2021 season with a final record of 6-8-2 overall, while going 3-5-1 during regular season ODAC play. Over the course of the year, the Tigers outscored their opponents (28-26), attempted more shots (213-211), had more assists (21-15), made more saves (76-52) and took more corner kicks (94-85).
