Hampden-Sydney Falls 2-0 To Lynchburg On Senior Night

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – The Hampden-Sydney College soccer team fell to the visiting University of Lynchburg 2-0 on Saturday evening during Homecoming Weekend on Hellmuth-Gibson Field in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action. The Hornets (10-4-1, 6-1 ODAC) led 1-0 at the half before scoring a second goal after the break to secure the 2-0 win past the host Tigers (5-7-2, 2-5-1 ODAC).

"Disappointing night here on senior night," said fifth-year head coach Tommy DiNuzzo. "Although we thought the game was pretty even, we gave up some very avoidable goals that made our life extremely difficult. All we can do is get ready for a must win game at EMU."

Prior to the start of the game, H-SC honored its five seniors for their contributions over the past four years. Cody Brugos (Dinwiddie), Ian Fitzgerald (Newport News), Grayson Harmon (Church Road), Paul Mahaffy (Yorktown), and Jon Vergara (Chesterfield) were all given a framed jersey during the presentation.

Lynchburg got on the scoreboard first at 9:57 on an unassisted goal by Kenny Robles. The Hornets would take their 1-0 lead into halftime while outshooting H-SC 6-0 in the opening half.

The visitors would push the lead up to two with a goal by Nick Foley at 46:13. However it was the Tigers that outshot Lynchburg in the second half 9-7. Sophomore Devin Kohout (Alexandria) had the lone shot on goal for H-SC in the 88th minute.

Fitzgerald played all 90 minutes in goal and made four saves for the Tigers.

H-SC will travel for its regular season finale at Eastern Mennonite University on Tuesday, October 26. The contest with the Royals (2-14, 2-6 ODAC) gets underway at 7 p.m. from the EMU Turf Field.
