HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – The Hampden-Sydney College soccer team dropped a 3-2 decision to visiting Randolph-Macon College on Saturday evening at Hellmuth-Gibson Field. The Tigers scored a pair of goals in the second half, but it was not enough to overcome a halftime deficit to their archrival Yellow Jackets. H-SC falls to 4-3-1 overall and 1-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC), while R-MC moves to 6-2-1 overall and 2-0 in the ODAC.
In the first half, the Tigers outshot the Yellow Jackets, 6-1, but the shot by the visitors resulted in the lone goal for either team in the first half at 42:23 from a free kick. R-MC had a 1-0 lead at halftime.
The visitors would extend their lead with another goal at 67:42, but junior
Boyce Purdie (Clinton, NC) pulled H-SC back to within one with a goal on the right side past the goalkeeper at 80:47. The Yellow Jackets extended their lead back to two with a goal at 82:20. The Tigers answered once again with a goal by sophomore
Emory Davis (Palmyra) off a pass from junior
Michael Ogenyi (Virginia Beach) at 87:45. H-SC, however, was not able to take another shot with R-MC coming away with the 3-2 road win.
Freshman goalie
Connor Kitson (Wake Forest, NC) made three saves while playing all 90 minutes in front of the net for the Tigers.
H-SC continues its homestand on Wednesday, October 6, against Randolph College. The contest against the WildCats gets underway at 7 p.m. on Hellmuth-Gibson Field.
