WINCHESTER, Va. - Junior Jake O'Brien/Scituate, Mass. tallied five goals and an assist to lead the Hampden-Sydney College lacrosse team with a win in its Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener over Shenandoah University, 16-9, on the road at Sprint Field at the Shentel Stadium in Winchester. The Tigers improve to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
After the host Hornets took a 2-0 lead at 3:21 in the first quarter, senior Jack Hayden/Apex, N.C. found the back of the net at 1:59 off a pass from sophomore Sean Duffy/Ambler, Pa. With 32 seconds left in the first period, sophomore Bobby Clagett/Brandywine, Md. took another pass from Duffy to even the score at 2-2.
The Tigers' scoring run continued into the second period as O'Brien scored his first goal of the game at 12:02, unassisted. Duffy's shot at 10:07 got past the Shenandoah goalie off an assist by junior Jared Medwar/Apex, N.C. at 6:23 in the period, O'Brien scored unassisted to conclude the run and give H-SC a 5-2 lead. After the Hornets scored a pair of goals, O'Brien scored his third goal of the quarter at :56 off a pass from Hayden with the Tigers leading 6-5 at the break.
O'Brien opened the second half with a goal at 13:45 off a pass from junior Reilly French/Frederick, Md. Junior Charlie Doetzer/Holly Springs, N.C. scored his goal at 10:28 off a pass from Hayden. Sophomore Presley Miller/Annapolis, Md. continued the Tiger scoring stretch at 9:02 off another pass from Hayden. After Shenandoah scored, the Tigers scored six goals, stretching into the fourth quarter to pull away from the hosts. Clagett scored the next two for H-SC at 4:21 and 1:42 in the third. Doetzer scored his second goal of the period with 45 seconds left to give the Tigers the 12-6 lead.
Duffy opened the scoring in the fourth at 13:23 and O'Brien concluded scoring on the afternoon at 12:40. Hayden finished the stretch of six-straight goals for H-SC at 12:04. Freshman Nick Thompson/Midlothian finished the scoring for the Tigers at 5:26.
Senior Nick Arcuri/Apex, N.C. earned the win playing 58:16 and making 15 saves. Junior Jake Brummett/Glen Rock, Pa. won 22 of 26 faceoffs while picking up 19 ground balls.
The Tigers stay on the road when they travel to defending national champions and nationally-ranked #3 Cabrini on Tuesday, March 10. The game against the Cavaliers gets underway at 3 p.m.
