HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Senior Chase Mayberry/Appomattox pitched a three-hit shutout with eight strikeouts in the first game, while classmate Jacob Bartlett/Chesterfield and junior Nick Grohowski/Chesterfield each had one hit and one RBI, as Hampden-Sydney College split a non-conference baseball doubleheader against visiting Moravian College on Saturday at Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark - Wurdeman Stadium. Mayberry gained the complete game pitching victory in the 2-0 opener for the host Tigers (3-3), while sophomore Trenton Tiller/Powhatan took the mound setback in the 11-0 nightcap against the visiting Greyhounds (1-1).
In game one, H-SC scored two runs on four hits … scoring both runs in the second inning of the seven-inning opener. In the second, senior captain Matt Spagnolo/Glen Allen (0-1) was hit by a pitch to begin the at-bat and later scored on an infield RBI single to shortstop by Grohowski (1-3, RBI). Grohowski would later cross the plate when Bartlett (1-2, RBI) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and two outs.
Mayberry (1-0) took care of things on the mound for the Tigers, pitching the complete game shutout over 7.0 innings, scattering just three hits with eight strikeouts and no walks.
Senior Jonathan Triesler/Chesterfield (1-2) and junior Ryan Clawson/Moseley (1-2) collected the other two hits.
In game two, H-SC was shutout on four hits in the seven-inning nightcap. Bartlett (1-2), senior Andrew Kasiski/Chesapeake (1-3), sophomore Max Lipscomb/Virginia Beach (1-1) and freshman Mark Currin/Toano (1-3) had the hits for the Tigers.
Tiller (1-1) started and pitched the first 5.0 innings, allowing eight hits and four runs, two earned, with five strikeouts and one walk. Freshman Ryan Boyce/Suffolk followed and faced five batters without recording an out, yielding five hits and five runs, all earned, with no strikeouts and no walks. Classmate Owen Tappy/Charlotte, N.C. pitched 1.0 inning, allowing three hits and two runs, both earned, with no strikeouts and one walk. Sophomore Kieran Conway/Chesapeake tossed the final scoreless inning, yielding no hits with two strikeouts and no walks.
H-SC and Moravian will complete the three-game weekend series with a single game on Sunday, February 23, at 12 p.m. at the Ty Cobb Ballpark.
