Hampden-Sydney Baseball Defeats Visiting Moravian 6-3

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Senior Josh Duimstra/Montpelier had one hit and two RBIs, and classmate Andrew Kasiski/Chesapeake had three hits and one RBI, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 6-3 non-conference baseball win past Moravian College on Sunday afternoon on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Sophomore Nick Graziano/Virginia Beach earned the pitching victory for the host Tigers (4-3) against the visiting Greyhounds (1-2), while senior Bradford Webb/Charlotte Court House gained the save.

H-SC scored six runs on 15 hits … scoring two runs in the fifth inning, three runs in the decisive sixth and one run in the seventh. The Tigers trailed 3-0 through four innings before rallying back for the final three-run margin of victory to secure the weekend series win, as well.

In the fifth, senior Jacob Bartlett/Chesterfield (2-5, RBI) hit a run-scoring double down the right field line to score classmate Jonathan Triesler/Chesterfield (3-4), who had singled with one out. Bartlett crossed the plate via an RBI single off the bat of junior Ryan Clawson/Moseley (1-3, RBI) with two outs.

In the sixth, Duimstra (1-4, 2 RBIs) had what proved to be the game-winning hit when he provided a two-run single that plated both senior Chase Counts/Virginia Beach (2-4) and junior Nick Grohowski/Chesterfield (2-4)—Grohowski scoring the game-winning run. Counts and Grohowski had each reached base on singles. Kasiski (3-5, RBI) added a run-scoring single during the at-bat, as well, scoring Triesler, who had also singled.

In the seventh, senior captain Matt Spagnolo/Glen Allen (0-3) added an insurance run when he walked and later scored from second base with some heads-up base running on a fielder's choice ball to the third baseman who went to second for the force out.

Graziano (1-1) started on the mound for the Tigers and pitched the first 6.1 solid innings, scattering six hits and three runs, two earned, with six strikeouts and one walk. Senior Cameron Meyers/Benson, N.C. tossed 1.2 scoreless innings, allowing no hits with one strikeout and two walks. Webb (1) pitched the final shutout inning, yielding no hits with two strikeouts and no walks.

H-SC is schedule to host Southern Virginia University in non-conference action on Wednesday, February 26, at 3 p.m. at the Ty Cobb Ballpark.
