Hampden-Sydney Basketball Earns Hard-Fought Home Win Past Ferrum 74-68

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Sophomore Jack Wyatt/Richmond scored 21 points to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a hard-fought 74-68 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball home win past Ferrum College on Wednesday night at S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium. Senior captain Kevin Quinn/Apex, N.C. added 16 points, and junior captain Jake Hahn/Ruckersville had 14 points and eight rebounds, along with a career-high and game-high eight assists for the host Tigers (12-7, 7-3 ODAC), who led 35-30 at halftime en route to their fourth-straight win and 11th win in the last 13 games. Kajuan Madden-McAfee scored a game-high 26 points for the visiting Panthers (8-10, 3-6 ODAC).

"What an unbelievable environment tonight," said first-year head coach Caleb Kimbrough. "I'd like to thank all the students, faculty, staff, and supporters who came out … they were a huge reason we were able to get it done. Ferrum gave us all we could handle … I'm proud of the way our guys battled all night."

H-SC opened the contest with a three-point field goal by senior Chaise Johnson/Richmond for an early 3-0 advantage, before FC responded with 10 unanswered points to lead 10-3 at 15:29, getting a pair of three-pointers from Madden-McAfee. The Tigers answered with a quick 13-4 run to lead 16-14 with 12:40 on the clock, getting points from five different players, including a conventional three-point play by Wyatt and three-pointers by Quinn and Hahn. Another three-pointer from Madden-McAfee had the Panthers ahead 20-16 at 11:03, but the Garnet & Grey battled back with a 16-4 run to lead 32-24 with 3:22 left in the opening half—Wyatt sparking the outburst with seven points, while Quinn added five points, including another three-pointer. It was a 35-30 lead at the intermission after Quinn connected on is third triple of the half.

H-SC continued its momentum to begin the second half, extending the lead to 46-37 with 13:20 left to play, getting four points each from Wyatt and freshman Ryan Clements/Conyers. Ga., and a three-pointer from Hahn. The Tigers maintained the advantage, and led 58-53 at 6:22 after another three-pointer by Hahn. FC was able to tie the closely-played contest for the fourth and final time at 62-62 with 3:15 on the clock, as Rashad Reed made the 15th three-pointer by the visitors. H-SC, however, outscored the Panthers 12-6 over the final 2:36 to secure the triumph—Quinn scoring on a layup for the go-ahead basket before Johnson connected on the 10th three-pointer made by the hosts, who added 5-6 free throws over the final 31-seconds.

Wyatt led H-SC with his 21 points for his team-best eighth 20-point game, adding a career-high five assists. Quinn finished with his 16 points for the Tigers, including 4-8 three-pointers. Hahn had his 14 points and eight rebounds, adding career-highs and game-highs of eight assists and four steals. Clements and Johnson each contributed eight points, with Clements adding five assists. H-SC shot 51% (28-55) from the field, including 44% (10-23) on three-pointers, and 80% (8-10) at the free throw line. The Tigers had 22 assists on 28 field goals and enjoyed a 34-18 advantage in points scored in the paint.

Madden-McAfee led FC with his game-high 26 points, including 8-15 three-pointers, adding nine rebounds. Nick Helton finished with 11 points for the Panthers, while Carrington Young had eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds. FC shot 46% (25-54) from the field, including 41% (15-37) on three-pointers, and 50% (3-6) at the line. The Panthers had 19 assists on 25 field goals.

H-SC will play on the road at ODAC opponent Shenandoah University on Saturday afternoon, February 1, at 2 p.m. in Winchester.

The contest was designated as the Chuck-A-Duck for United Way to help raise awareness for the United Way of Prince Edward County and its 3rd Annual Duck Derby on the Appomattox River scheduled for Friday, May 1, during the weekend of the 42nd Heart of Virginia Festival. All funds raised support programs and people in and around Prince Edward County.
