Hampden-Sydney Basketball Earns Road Win At Bridgewater 79-67

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- Sophomore Jack Wyatt/Richmond posted his fifth double-double this season with 18 points and a game-high 15 rebounds to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 79-67 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball road win at Bridgewater College on Saturday afternoon. Junior captain Jake Hahn/Ruckersville added 15 points for the visiting Tigers (9-7, 4-3 ODAC), who led 42-24 at halftime en route to their eighth win in the last 10 games. Davrion Grier scored a game-high 26 points for the host Eagles (6-10, 2-5 ODAC).

"I thought we really tried to play better team basketball at both ends of the floor today," said first-year head coach Caleb Kimbrough. "Big road win!"

H-SC started fast at BC, jumping out to an early 19-5 advantage just 7:06 into the contest with points from five different players, including two three-point field goals by senior captain Kevin Quinn/Apex, N.C., another three-pointer and a jumper from senior Chaise Johnson/Richmond, a pair of baskets inside by Wyatt, and a basket each from freshmen Chase Turner/Virginia Beach and Miles Harris/Virginia Beach. Hahn made 1-2 free throws at 7:56 to make it 30-15, and the Tigers extended their advantage to 40-18 with 4:43 on the first-half clock after a three-pointer by Turner. H-SC led 42-24 at the intermission as Wyatt finished the half shooting 7-8 from the field for 14 points, adding nine rebounds at the break, and Quinn had nine first-half points for the visitors.

BC tried to get back in the game early in the second half, closing to within 43-31 just 1:58 in behind five quick points from Chandler Murray. H-SC, however, responded with consecutive layups by freshman Ryan Clements/Conyers, Ga. and Quinn to push the lead back to 16 points at 47-31 with 16:38 remaining. The Tigers maintained the comfortable margin, leading 53-37 at 13:07 after back-to-back layups from Hahn. It was still a 62-48 advantage following a basket down low by Wyatt with 6:37 on the clock. The Eagles used a late 16-9 run sparked by eight points from Grier to get within seven at 71-64 with 1:36 on the clock, but H-SC secured the road triumph with layups by Johnson and Turner, along with 2-2 free throws each from Hahn and Clements.

Wyatt led H-SC with his fifth double-double of 18 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Hahn finished with his 15 points, adding seven rebounds for the Tigers. Johnson had 14 points off the bench, while Clements contributed 12 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Quinn had 11 points and five rebounds, and Turner added seven points, five rebounds and a game-high five steals—equaling his career-high. H-SC shot 45% (32-71) from the field, including 28% (5-18) on three-pointers, and 67% (10-15) at the free throw line.

Grier led BC with his game-high 26 points, adding five rebounds, a game-high four blocks and three steals. BC shot 42% (25-60) from the field, including 23% (7-30) on three-pointers, and 63% (10-16) at the line.

H-SC returns home to welcome ODAC opponent Randolph College on Wednesday night, January 22, at 7 p.m. in S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium. It's the V Foundation Game in support of cancer research with donations being collected during the second media timeout of the first half (first game stoppage under 7:00). In addition, a halfcourt shootout will take place at halftime to raise additional funds, and all proceeds from this special contest will go to the V Foundation.
