Hampden-Sydney Basketball Falls At Lynchburg 76-51

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Junior captain Jake Hahn/Ruckersville scored 12 points, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped a 76-51 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball decision on the road at the University of Lynchburg on Wednesday night in Lynchburg. The visiting Tigers (8-7, 3-3 ODAC) trailed 34-26 at halftime against the host Hornets (10-5, 5-1 ODAC). Lynchburg was led by Chance Greene with a game-high 26 points, including five three-point field goals.

H-SC scored the first four points of the contest for an early 4-0 advantage in the opening minute as sophomore Jack Wyatt/Richmond and Hahn each scored inside, and a jumper from Hahn made it 6-2 at 17:10. Lynchburg used a 7-2 run to lead 9-8 at 15:25, but the Tigers battled back with seven unanswered points to lead 15-9 at 12:25, getting five quick points from senior captain Kevin Quinn/Apex, N.C., including a three-pointer. The visitors still led 17-12 after two free throws by freshman Chase Turner/Virginia Beach with 10:28 on the clock. The Hornets, however, responded with a 12-2 run to lead 24-19 at 4:10, and extended their half-closing run to 22-9 to lead 34-26 at the intermission. Greene did most of the damage, finishing with 21 first-half points, including four three-pointers.

H-SC was within 39-32 early in the second half following a jumper by senior Chaise Johnson/Richmond at 16:14, but would get no closer. The Tigers trailed 46-34 when Lynchburg called a timeout after a foul was whistled against the visitors with 13:19 remaining. During the timeout, two technical fouls were assessed to the H-SC bench, resulting in four made free throws by the Hornets and a 50-34 advantage. The Tigers never recovered as the hosts extended the advantage to 69-43 at 8:02, taking its largest lead in the final two minutes at 76-49 toward the final margin.

Hahn led H-SC with his 12 points, adding four rebounds and two assists. Wyatt finished with nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds for the Tigers. Johnson contributed eight points and four assists, while Quinn had seven points and five rebounds. H-SC shot 33% (20-61) from the field, including 14% (3-22) on three-pointers, and 53% (8-15) at the free throw line.

Greene led Lynchburg with his game-high 26 points, including 5-10 three-pointers, adding five assists and three steals. Luke Romeo finished with 12 points for the Hornets, including 4-9 three-pointers in the second half, while T.C. Thacker added a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, along with three assists and three blocks. Lynchburg shot 42% (25-59) from the field, including 34% (12-35) on three-pointers, and 61% (14-23) at the line.

H-SC will remain on the road to play at ODAC member Bridgewater College on Saturday afternoon, January 18, at 2 p.m. in Bridgewater.
