VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS (YouTube)

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Junior captain Jake Hahn/Ruckersville equaled his career-high with a game-high 23 points, adding a game-high 12 rebounds for his seventh double-double this season, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 77-64 non-conference basketball home win past Sewanee (Tenn.) on Monday afternoon at S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium. Freshman Ryan Clements/Conyers, Ga. had 16 points for the Tigers (6-5), who rallied from a 14-point deficit in the first half to win their fifth consecutive game. Joey Knox scored 19 points for the visiting Tigers (7-5) on the second and final day of the College's Holiday Classic.

"Great win today for the guys," said first-year head coach Caleb Kimbrough. "Very slow start against a really talented Sewanee team, but we stayed with the game plan and were able to make some plays in the second half. Conference play from here on out … this is what we have been preparing for all year."

H-SC started slowly as Sewanee jumped out to a 23-9 lead with 11:51 left in the opening half, aided by five early three-point field goals. The host Tigers, however, battled back with an 8-2 run to get within 25-17 at 7:38, getting four points inside from sophomore Jack Wyatt/Richmond. The visiting Tigers pushed their advantage back to 12 points at 33-21 with 5:10 on the first-half clock, but H-SC scored six unanswered points to pull within 33-27 at 2:19, getting points from senior Chaise Johnson/Richmond, Hahn and Clements. Sewanee, though, led 36-29 at the intermission.

H-SC trailed 41-33 early in the second half at 17:30, before beginning its second-half comeback against Sewanee. The host Tigers finally caught and went ahead of the visiting Tigers with 10:12 remaining on a pair of free throws by Clements for a 54-53 lead. The hosts pushed their advantage to 63-57 at 4:33 via a free throw from junior Baker Haviland/Roanoke that followed a three-pointer by senior captain Kevin Quinn/Apex, N.C. H-SC had all of the momentum at this point, extending its lead to 77-62 with just 14-seconds left to play when Wyatt made a pair of free throws. The host outscored the visitors 48-28 during the second half, including 27-11 over the final 11:45. Hahn (13) and Clements (12) combined for 25 second-half points to lead the outstanding effort.

Hahn led H-SC with his game-high 23 points to equal his career-high, adding a game-high 12 rebounds for his seventh double-double in 11 games, along with four assists and three steals—the latter equaling his career-high, as well. Clements finished with 16 points, adding four rebounds, three assists and three steals for the Tigers. Wyatt and Quinn each had 12 points, Johnson added nine points and equaled his career-high with six rebounds, and freshman Chase Turner/Virginia Beach contributed six rebounds and a career-high five assists. H-SC shot 45% (30-67) from the field, including 15% (2-13) on three-pointers, and 58% (15-26) at the free throw line. The Tigers enjoyed a 52-24 advantage in points scored in the paint, 21-5 in points off turnovers and 26-13 in bench points.

Knox led Sewanee with his 19 points, adding seven rebounds. Adrian Thomas finished with 11 points and eight rebounds for the Tigers. Sewanee shot 38% (22-58) from the field, including 29% (10-35) on three-pointers, and 83% (10-12) at the line.

H-SC remains at home this week and will play again after the New Year's Holiday, hosting Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) member and nationally-ranked No. 21 Guilford College on Saturday, January 4, 2020, at 2 p.m. in Fleet Gym. It starts a stretch of 14-straight ODAC games to comprise the remainder of the regular season.
