Guilford Knocks Off Basketball 63-53 in ODAC Tournament

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In a low-scoring, low-possession first half, the Tigers hot shooting allowed them to lead for the majority of the opening frame
  • With the game knotted at 9-9, the Tigers scored seven of eight to go out in front 16-10 at the 9:53 mark
  • H-Sc would go on to lead by as many as nine, but the Quakers trimmed the lead down to six, 27-21 going into halftime
  • Guilford flipped the script to start the second half, going on an 8-2 spurt to tie the game at 29-29 with 13:46 to play
  • H-SC wrestled back control with the next five points and led 36-32 at 11:10, but an 8-0 Quakers run gave Guilford their first lead of the half at 40-36 at 8:15
  • Hampden-Sydney trailed by just three, 47-44, at 5:54, but seven consecutive Guilford points gave them a 10-point advantage on the scoreboard at 54-44 with 2:27 left in the game
  • The Tigers cut the deficit to seven off a JaVonte Reddick three pointer on the next possession but never got any closer than that the rest of the way

  • Malik Crute contributed 12 points, six rebounds, three assists, two steals, and two blocks
  • Josh Katowitz posted 10 points with a team-high seven rebounds

  • Jaylen Gore notched a game-high 16 points to go with five rebounds
  • Alston Thompson recorded 15 points and eight rebounds 

STATS OF THE GAME

  • H-SC shot 39% overall and 35% from three on seven makes while Guilford went 35% and 24% with five connections from deep
  • The Quakers won the game on the foul line where they shot 20-31 compared to a 6-11 performance for the Tigers
  • Turnovers also played a key as Hampden-Sydney had 18 giveaways compared to 11 for Guilford, leading to a 17-9 GC advantage in points off turnovers
  • The Quakers also held a 15-3 edge in second chance points
