Football Falls 36-6 to Washington & Lee

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-The Hampden-Sydney Tigers had a three-game win streak snapped as they fell 36-6 to Washington & Lee. The game was fairly even except for the second quarter in which the Generals outscored Hampden-Sydney 28-0. With the loss, the Tigers now stand at 4-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play. Washington & Lee improves to 5-2 on the season and 2-1 in the ODAC. It is a very tight race in the ODAC standing now with four teams standing at the top with one loss each.

The first quarter of the game was very even in time of possession as the Generals controlled the ball for 7:32 to the Tigers' 7:28. The Tigers came close to scoring on their second drive, getting to the Washington & Lee six-yard line but turned the ball over on downs.

The Generals then took the ensuing drive into the second quarter, using 11 plays to drive 94 yards for a 7-0 lead. Washington & Lee then scored on its next two offensive drives to go up 21-0 with 2:47 to go in the half.

Just over a minute and a half later, Dominic Volpe picked off a Tiger pass and took it 37 yards and a 28-0 lead to go into the half.

The third quarter was much like the first – each team punted and then turned it over on downs. On the Tigers' third drive of the quarter, however, the offense drove 67 yards in 13 plays to see Alec Cobb (Jamestown, NC/Ragsdale) hit Cam Johnson (Dillwyn, VA/Buckingham) for a five-yard touchdown pass.

Washington & Lee, however, was able to add to its lead by blocking the extra point and returning it for two points to take a 30-6 lead.

The Generals then scored on their next drive to take their final 36-6 lead with nine minutes remaining.

On the day, Hampden-Sydney had 282 yards of offense on 232 passing and 50 rushing. Cobb was 27-of-42 for 221 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Carter Cunningham (Farmville, VA/Fuqua) led all receivers with seven catches for 61 yards. Johnson had five catches for 31 yards and a score, and Major Morgan (Onancock, VA/Broadwater Academy), Patrick Kline (New Cumberland, PA/Trinity), and Mike DeMasi (Virginia Beach, VA/Frank W. Cox) each had four receptions for a combined 100 yards.

DeMasi carried the ball 15 times for 41 yards.

Defensively, the Tigers allowed 429 yards of offense courtesy 372 rushing and 57 passing. Kendall Blankenship (Appomattox, VA/Appomattox) led the way with a game-high 12 tackles. Griffin Davis (Charlottesville, VA/Monticello) added seven stops, including two in the backfield, and Chad Vanlandingham (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee) had six tackles. Brian Gwaltney (Colonial Heights, VA/Colonial Heights) and Tanner Ramey (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee) each had five tackles.

The Tigers return to action next Saturday, October 28 as they travel to Emory, Virginia to face the Wasps of Emory & Henry. Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM.
