Roanoke Uses Second Half Comeback to Defeat Basketball

Hampden-Sydney Basketball led 44-33 at halftime but Roanoke came back to defeat the Tigers 78-74.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Hampden-Sydney led 6-2 after two minutes behind three pointers from Jake Duncan and Kevin Quinn.
  • The Maroons caught fire from three shortly afterward and utilized a 22-6 run to go ahead 24-12 with 11:43 to play in the half
  • H-SC still trailed by 12, 29-17, midway through the half, but the Tigers responded by scoring 14 of the next 16 points to tie the game at 31-31 off a Nick Chase layup at 4:40
  • The Tigers then forced back to back Joey Miller turnovers that they converted into four points to go ahead 35-31 at 3:37
  • John Caldwell briefly ended the bleeding with two free throws at 3:17, but H-SC scored the last nine points of the half, including a Josh Katowitz three pointer at the buzzer, to lead 44-33 at intermission
  • The Tigers scored five of the first eight points of the second half to extend the lead to 49-36, but an 8-0 Maroons run trimmed the deficit to just five, 49-44, at 15:40.
  • H-SC pushed the lead back to double digits three minutes later at 54-44, but the Tigers went cold from the field and committed two offensive fouls while Roanoke scored 14 straight to go in front by four, 58-54, at 8:30
  • H-SC trailed just 61-60 at the 4:43 mark, but John Caldwell went on a personal 5-0 spurt to put Roanoke ahead by six with three minutes to play
  • Following a three from each team, CJ Miles fouled JaVonte Reddick on a three pointer, and he made all three to put the Tigers down 69-66 with two minutes to play
  • Roanoke continued to lead by six with 26 seconds to play, but Roanoke fouled Reddick beyond the arc for the second time at the 18 second mark, and he sank all three to once again make it a three-point game.
  • H-SC was forced to foul and CJ Miles made both shots to make it 77-72
  • Roanoke then committed yet another three-point shooting foul against Reddick, who made the first two with nine seconds to play to trim the lead to 77-74.
  • The Tigers fouled, and John Caldwell made the first and missed the second, but the Tigers were unable to score from there

TIGER TOP PERFORMERS

  • Reddick scored a team-high 12 points, making eight of his nine free throw attempts
  • Logan Samuels added 11 points, four assists, three steals, and two blocks
  • Katowitz contributed 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds
  • Duncan scored 10 points to go with four boards
  • Malik Crute tallied nine points, five rebounds, and three assists
  • Kevin Quinn scored nine points with three assists and two steals

FOR THE FOES

  • Caldwell poured in 32 points along with a game-high 10 rebounds. He shot 9-15 overall, 6-8 from three, and 8-9 from the foul line
  • Caleb Jordan tallied 15 points and six rebounds and made all seven free throw attempts
  • CJ Miles scored 12 points
