Basketball Upsets Guilford 64-58 Thanks to Duncan and Crute

Hampden-Sydney Basketball conquered Guilford College on Saturday in Greensboro for the first time since January 25, 2006, behind career days from Jake Duncan and Malik Crute.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Hampden-Sydney took the lead early and never looked back, jumping to a 22-9 lead in the first ten minutes of the game.
  • The Quakers came within striking distance of the Tigers with three minutes left in the first half thanks to a 14-7 stretch.
  • The Tigers responded by extending their lead to nine entering halftime with the score 32-23.
  • H-SC kept the lead for most of the second half while Guilford chipped it away, making the final 15 minutes close. The game was tied on four occasions, and Guilford briefly led three times, but the Tigers scored on their next offensive possession on all three occasions. 
  • In the final five minutes, the Tigers pulled away after Malik Crute sank back-to-back three pointers followed by a Josh Katowitz layup assisted by Crute to put H-SC up six with 1:30 to go.
  • Dominique Henderson trimmed the deficit to four with just under a minute to go, but the Tigers locked down on defense to put away the game

TIGER TOP PERFORMERS

  • Jake Duncan had a career-high 29 points, shooting 10-16 overall, 6-8 from three, along with four rebounds
  • Malik Crute also cashed in a career-high 16 points thanks to a 6-11 performance, 4-6 from behind the arc, to go with eight boards, five assists, and two blocks
  • JaVonte Reddick tallied six points and eight rebounds

FOR THE FOES

  • Jarrod Rodgers had 13 points
  • Dominique Henderson had 11 points and three rebounds
  • Kyler Gregory added 10 points and three caroms
  • Alston Thompson grabbed nine boards

STATS OF THE GAME

  • H-SC shot 51% overall, 12-21 from three, and 4-5 from the charity stripe, while Guilford was 33% overall, 5-21 from three, and 3-6 from the foul line.
  • In the second half, Hampden-Sydney was 52% from the floor, making four out of nine three pointers, and went 4-5 from the foul line while dealing with nine turnovers.
  • Guilford held a 17-5 advantage in points off turnovers as the Tigers committed 17 turnovers on the day compared to only three for the Quakers
  • Guilford reeled in 19 offensive rebounds, resulting in a 16-4 advantage in points in the paint.
