H-SC Wipes Away Late 12-Point Deficit to Defeat Washington and Lee

Box Score

Hampden-Sydney Basketball came back from a 12-point deficit with 5:35 to play to defeat Washington and Lee 66-62 in ODAC action from Fleet Gymnasium.

THE BASICS

  • Final Score: Hampden-Sydney 66, Washington and Lee 62
  • Records: H-SC 2-3, 1-0 ODAC; Washington and Lee 1-5, 0-1 ODAC
  • Location: Hampden-Sydney, VA – Fleet Gymnasium

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Defense ruled for much of the first half with neither team scoring in the first three minutes
  • However, just three minutes later, the Generals led 10-4 as they scored all 10 points in the paint.
  • Two Tigers possessions later, Hampden-Sydney tied the game courtesy of a Jake Duncan three pointer followed by three free throws for Kevin Quinn after getting fouled on an attempt beyond the arc.
  • The game remained within a one to two possession score through the three-minute mark, 26-21, but the Generals scored eight of the last 12 points in the half to go into intermission up nine, 34-25
  • H-SC gradually chipped away at the lead by attacking the paint, trailing just 38-34 just over four minutes in.
  • H-SC couldn't cut the lead to less than four over the next 10 minutes and the Generals used a 10-2 run to go up 55-43 with 5:35 to play
  • H-SC used a three-point play from Nick Chase and a triple from Kevin Quinn to get within six, 55-49.
  • W&L went back up by eight on the next possession, but Chase drained two free throws. Following a timeout, the Tigers used a fullcourt press to rattle the Generals
  • W&L turned over the ball on the inbound pass as Logan Samuels tipped the pass and corralled the ball, dishing it to Guilherme Guimaraes who handed it off to Duncan for a layup to make it only a four-point game, 57-53, at the 3:47 mark.
  • Washington and Lee then committed a turnover just after crossing halfcourt as Samuels stole the ball and streaked down for the layup to put the Tigers down two, 57-55, and forcing a Generals timeout at 3:33.
  • W&L gave away the ball on their third consecutive possession but H-SC was not able to capitalize. However, the Tigers then forced a missed three and Chase threw a lob pass out of the low post to a cutting Guimaraes for a dunk to tie the game at 57 with 2:20 remaining in the game
  • Clayton Murtha scored the next trip down for W&L but Guimaraes tied the game again with 1:26 to play off a putback layup
  • Devin Kearns answered with a long two-point jumper just as the shot clock was expiring to put the Generals ahead 61-59 with a minute left.
  • Guimaraes was fouled in the double bonus 10 seconds later. He made the first and missed the second, but he gained control of a 50/50 rebound on the arc with 41 seconds to play and H-SC called a timeout to set up a play
  • Out of the timeout, Chase found Guimaraes for a layup to go up by one, 61-61, with 26 seconds remaining
  • Kearns drove down the left side of the paint for a layup but Guimaraes blocked it and Chase reeled in the rebound and was fouled with 6.3 ticks left on the clock. Chase made both to provide H-SC with a 64-61 lead.
  • With just six fouls committed in the half, Hampden-Sydney elected to commit a foul instead of allowing the Generals to tie the game on a three pointer or an and-one. The strategy paid off as Kearns made the first and intentionally missed the second, but Duncan controlled the board and made two free throws to seal the victory.
