Box Score

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA – Hampden-Sydney Basketball pulled away in the second half to earn 77-66 win over Emory & Henry on Monday night. H-SC improved to 14-7 overall, 7-5 ODAC while the Wasps fell to 3-18, 2-10 ODAC.

The Tigers struggled defensively in the first half, and after trailing by eight, 31-23, with 6:48 to go until intermission, Head Coach Dee Vick called a timeout and made a complete line change, inserting Mike Murray (Norfolk, VA / Norfolk Christian), Joe Lewis (Dinwiddie, VA / Dinwiddie), Nick Chase (Wilmington, NC / Coastal Christian), Mike Murray (Norfolk, VA / Norfolk Christian), and William Scott (Virginia Beach, VA / Norfolk Academy). The group brought intensity and energy and quickly turned the tide of the game, using an 11-2 run to take a 34-33 lead at the 3:08 mark and held the Wasps to just five points over the last 6:48. H-SC couldn't manage to score over the last three minutes, and a John Shelor three pointer with eight second left gave Emory & Henry a 36-34 advantage going into the half.

H-SC started out the second half much better than the first, and five consecutive Leon Hargrove (Raleigh, NC / Middle Creek) points along with a Mitch Owens (Williamsburg, VA / Walsingham) layup put the Tigers up 41-36 just two minutes in. Five straight Myles Turner points tied it at 41-41 two minutes later. H-SC gradually pulled away from there, taking several leads of 7-8 or more points. Several timely baskets from E&H kept them in the game, but H-SC went up by 13, 70-57, with 2:05 left and Murray sealed it at the free throw line, going 7-for-8 on freebies in the final minute.

Jake Duncan (Williamsburg, VA / Williamsburg Christian) tallied 14 points, seven boards, and two assists while Murray added 14 points and five rebounds in just 15 minutes. Greg Lewis (Mechanicsville, VA / Hanover) tallied 13 points while Owens tacked on 11. Hargrove contributed nine points, four assists, and three steals, and Josh Katowitz (Raleigh, NC / Heritage) contributed five points and seven caroms.

John Shelor posted a game-high 20 points, and Myles Turner provided 17 points, seven rebounds, and four assists.

H-SC shot 54.2% overall, 46.3% (6-13) from three, and 67.9% (19-28) on free throws. E&H was limited to a 41.5% output, made 12-27 three pointers, and went just 58.8% on free throws. H-SC was much improved defensively in the second half, holding the Wasps to a 35.7% performance from the floor. The Tigers held a 36-27 advantage on the glass and controlled the paint, outscoring the Wasps 32-10 there.
