Box Score SALEM, VA - The #3 seed Guilford College Quakers topped #6 seed Hampden-Sydney College 66-59 in the ODAC Tournament Quarterfinals on Thursday night. H-SC finishes their season at 16-11.
It was a tight-knit game for the majority of the first half. The Tigers took a 10-6 lead after a Nick Chase (Wilmington, NC / Coastal Christian)**** three pointer at 13:36, but a 12-2 Guilford run put the Quakers on top 18-12 at the 7:09 mark. H-SC trailed by five, 21-16, at 3:10, but back-to-back triples from Guilford gave them a 27-16 lead going into halftime.
Guilford continued to ride their momentum into the second half as they scored the first 12 points to go out in front 39-16 just over three minutes into the frame. The Tigers cut the lead down to 15, 43-28, at 14:06, but Guilford went back up 20, 53-33, with 10:46 left. The full-court press started getting Hampden-Sydney back into the game as a 16-4 run over nearly six minutes trimmed the deficit down to single digits at eight with 4:56 to go. H-SC would not get any closer from there until a Greg Lewis (Mechanicsville, VA / Hanover) three-pointer with nine seconds left provided the final score of 66-59.
Leon Hargrove (Raleigh, NC / Middle Creek) scored a team-high 13 points with three assists while Mike Murray (Norfolk, VA / Norfolk Christian) added on 10 points, six rebounds, and three steals.
Matt McCarthy poured in a game-high 23 points while Jonny Rice contributed 13 points and seven boards. Trever Hyatt added on 10 points, and Zachary Houston reeled in 11 rebounds with five assists.
Guilford shot 43% for the game compared to 39% for Hampden-Sydney. The Quakers drained 11-of-22 threes while the Tigers were 8-of-22. GC went 13-21 at the foul line and H-SC was 7-11.
