Generals Pull Away for 75-66 Win Over H-SC Hoops

LEXINGTON, VA – The Washington and Lee University Generals pulled away in the second half for a 75-66 win over Hampden-Sydney Basketball.

THE BASICS

  • Final Score: Washington and Lee 75, H-SC 66
  • Records: Hampden-Sydney 3-2/0-1 ODAC, Washington and Lee 4-2/1-1 ODAC

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • H-SC raced out to a 16-6 lead five minutes in to force Generals Head Coach Adam Hutchinson to call a timeout
  • The timeout worked wonders for W&L as they seven consecutive points from Andrew Franz spearheaded an 18-4 run over the next seven minutes to give the Generals a 24-20 lead at the 7:44 mark.
  • Two minutes later, W&L led by seven, but the Tigers cut the deficit to two, 32-30, following a Mitch Owens (Williamsburg, VA / Walsingham) jumper at 2:51.
  • Devin Kearns would go on to score the last five points of the half to put the Generals on top 37-30 at halftime
  • The Tigers opened up the half scoring the first two buckets to be down just four, but back-to-back layups from Andy Kleinlein and Clayton Murtha negated the momentum
  • The Generals lead remained around five to seven points for the majority of the first 10 minutes of the frame until Mike Murray (Norfolk, VA / Norfolk Christian) recorded two jumpers to find the Tigers down only 47-46 with 10:16 left in the game.
  • The momentum proved short lived as three minutes later the hosts were up 10 points, 57-47, with 6:34 left in the game.
  • WLU went on to lead by as many as 14, but H-SC trimmed the deficit down to just seven, 67-60, with a minute left, but the Generals put away the game at the foul line, making all eight attempts in the final minute.

TIGER TOP PERFORMERS

  • Andrew Evans (Raleigh, NC / Millbrook) recorded his first 20-point effort just five games into his young career. He made 7-of-11 shots, went 2-for-3 from three, and made all four free throw attempts. He also tallied four assists, three rebounds, two steals, and one block.
  • Owens came off the bench to score 16 as he shot 7-of-13

FOR THE FOES

  • Kleinlein scored a game-high 21 points to go with four assists and two steals
  • Kearns led the bench crew with 15 points, six rebounds, and three steals
  • Murtha contributed 10 points and a game-high seven boards

STATS OF THE GAME

  • Washington & Lee shot 52% compared to 44% for Hampden-Sydney
  • The Generals were an efficient 7-of-13 beyond the arc while the Tigers connected on just four of their 19 three-point tries
  • Each team committed 18 turnovers
