Basketball Wins South Region Classic, Defeats Mary Washington 71-66

FREDERICKSBURG, VA – Hampden-Sydney Basketball won the South Region Classic with a 71-66 win over host school Mary Washington.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Tigers registered the first six points of the game, but Mary Washington tallied 15 of the next 19 to go up 15-10 at 11:40
  • The Tigers trailed for nearly the rest of the second half but never found themselves down by more than five
  • An Asa Scott layup at 1:15 gave the Eagles a 29-25 advantage, but Gray Cheers (Supply, NC/West Brunswick) put in a layup 12 seconds later.
  • UMW's Brent Mahoney missed a three pointer with five seconds remaining with the shot clock about to expire, but Josh Lancaster (Charlotte, NC/Phillip O. Berry) grabbed the rebound and went coast-to-coast to score the game-tying layup at the buzzer
  • The buzzer beater proved to be a momentum changer as H-SC opened the half on a 17-5 run to surge ahead 46-34 just over six minutes in.
  • Leading by eight, 54-46, at the 9:23 mark, a 9-2 run over the next three minutes provided the Tigers a 15-point lead with 6:07 remaining
  • Mary Washington proceeded to score seven straight to get the deficit back down to eight, 63-55, at 3:11
  • Following two Mike Murray (Norfolk, VA/Norfolk Christian) free throws at 1:05, H-SC led 69-60
  • TJ Jones scored a few seconds later then a Tigers turnover led to another Jones layup, trimming the Tiger lead down to 69-64 with 38 ticks left on the clock
  • Hampden-Sydney missed the front end of a one-and-one free throw with 25 seconds remaining, and after two offensive rebounds, Scott scored on a layup with 3.8 seconds to go
  • JaVonte Reddick (Richmond, VA/L.C. Bird) was then fouled in the double bonus and calmly made both free throw attempts to seal the win

TIGER TOP PERFORMERS

  • Murray posted game highs of 12 points and seven rebounds
  • Jake Duncan (Williamsburg, VA/Williamsburg Christian) tallied 11 points and six rebounds
  • Andrew Evans (Raleigh, NC/Millbrook) contributed eight points, three boards, and three assists

FOR THE FOES

  • John Lutkenhaus totaled 12 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and four blocks
  • Mahoney poured in 12 points and seven caroms
  • Jones added 12 points

STATS OF THE GAME

  • Twelve of the 13 Tigers that played contributed at least two points apiece
  • Hampden-Sydney shot 53% for the game including a 59% mark after intermission
  • The defense was strong again, holding the Eagles to 29% shooting in the first half and 35% for the game
  • While the Tigers got to the foul line 27 times, they made just 14
  • H-SC held a slim edge on the glass, 41-37
