Box Score HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA – Randolph-Macon used a flurry of three-pointers to take down Hampden-Sydney Basketball 77-55 on Wednesday night.
The Yellow Jackets opened up the game with an 11-2 advantage, but Hampden-Sydney cut the deficit down to 11-8 at 13:25. Randolph-Macon scored the next eight points to take an 11-point lead, but the Tigers gradually trimmed it down to a 22-16 game with 5:50 to go in the half. R-MC led by as many as 15 in the first half before taking a 33-22 lead going into intermission.
The Tigers scored five of the first seven points come out of the break, making it a 35-27 Yellow Jackets lead two minutes in, but following a Joe Hassell three pointer at 16:47, Randolph-Macon once again led by 15, 44-29, at the 16:13 mark. R-MC pushed it out to as many as 18 and continued to lead by double digits thru to the nine-minute mark, but a Mitch Owens (Williamsburg, VA / Walsingham) triple at 8:14 put the Tigers down just nine with 8:14 left. Randolph-Macon responded with two free throws and back-to-back Lamont Moore shots from deep range to lead by 17 at 6:27 and put the game out of reach for the Tigers.
Jake Duncan (Williamsburg, VA / Williamsburg Christian) had a team-high 11 points to go with six rebounds while Owens added on 10 points, and Mike Murray (Norfolk, VA / Norfolk Christian) contributed nine points to go with five rebounds and five assists.
Moore scored a game-high 18 for Randolph-Macon while Mike Silverthorn had 17.
Randolph-Macon shot 48.3% for the game compared to a 31.1% mark for Hampden-Sydney. The Yellow Jackets connected on 14 of their 27 three-point attempts while H-SC went 7-23. R-MC held a 44-25 advantage on the glass.
Hampden-Sydney hosts Eastern Mennonite on Saturday at 2 pm.
