Zach Hunter's Late Three Gives Bridgewater 76-75 Win Over H-SC Basketball

BRIDGEWATER, VA – Zach Hunter nailed a three pointer with three seconds remaining to give Bridgewater College a 76-65 win over Hampden-Sydney Basketball on Wednesday afternoon.

The game was back and forth, featuring seven ties and 10 lead changes with neither team leading by more than 10.  Bridgewater led 29-22 with 5:01 remaining in the first half, but a 14-0 run spanning both halves put the Tigers out ahead 36-29 21 seconds into the second half. The Tigers pushed the lead out to 10, 42-32, three minutes into the half and looked like they may be pulling away.

Bridgewater ended the run for the Tigers, scoring 12 of the next 14 to tie the game at 44-44 with 14:22 remaining. They extended their run to 19-4, going out in front 53-46 at 11:29. The Tigers responded with another big spurt, accounting for 19 of the next 20 points to grab a 62-57 lead with eight minutes to go. H-SC continued to lead until 2:26 when an Ed Reddick layup tied the game at 69-69.

Greg Lewis (Mechanicsville, VA / Hanover) buried a three pointer at 1:25, but Aaron Adams was fouled and made two free throws to make it a 72-71 Tigers advantage at the 34 second mark. Murray was fouled immediately after H-SC inbounded the ball and made both of his free throw attempts to push the lead back to three, but Kyle Welty made a layup and was fouled but missed his free throw. Adams grabbed the offensive rebound, missed a layup, grabbed his own rebound and missed another shot before Jake Duncan (Williamsburg, VA / Williamsburg Christian) grabbed the board and was fouled. He missed his first free throw but made the second, making it a 75-73 Tiger lead with 14 seconds left before Hunter hit the game-winning three pointer.

Murray posted game-highs of 25 points and six assists along with a team-best five rebounds. He shot 8-12 from the floor and 8-9 from the foul line. Lewis added 13 points, and Leon Hargrove (Raleigh, NC / Middle Creek) contributed 11 points and five rebounds. Mitch Owens (Williamsburg, VA / Walsingham) added on 10 points, five rebounds, and three steals while Nick Chase (Wilmington, NC / Coastal Christian) notched nine points.

Kyle Welty led the Eagles with 21 points, Ed Reddick tallied 20 points, and Aaron Adams 11.

The two squads were nearly dead even on the stat sheet, but H-SC shot 10-18 from three compared to 5-13 for Bridgewater. The Eagles were a bit more efficient at the free throw line, going 17-21 while H-SC shot 17-25.

Hampden-Sydney hosts Randolph-Macon on Wednesday at 7 pm.
