The Tigers got off to a roaring start on both ends of the court. Two consecutive field goals from Khobi Williamson (Norfolk, VA / Maury) followed by back-to-back three pointers from Greg Lewis (Mechanicsville, VA / Hanover) and JaVonte Reddick (Richmond, VA / L.C. Bird) put H-SC up 10-0 at 15:35 to force a Randolph-Macon timeout. A Mike Murray (Norfolk, VA / Norfolk Christian) jumper pushed the lead out to 12-0, and Akeem Holmes ended the drought for the Yellow Jackets with a trifecta at 14:20 and followed it with another one to trim the deficit to 12-6.
H-SC wasted no time establishing control of the game again as a 9-0 run put the Tigers up 21-6 at 9:21 to force another Randolph-Macon timeout. The timeout didn't prove to do much good as H-SC extended their spurt to 16-2 to go up 28-8 at the 6:20 mark.
Randolph-Macon tallied the next five points, but a Murray step back three just before the shot clock buzzer kept the Tigers advantage at 15, 31-13, with four minutes left. The Randolph-Macon defense took over from there, holding the Tigers scoreless or the rest of the half to go on an 8-0 run to go into halftime down only 10, 31-21.
Hampden-Sydney ended the Macon run via two consecutive Williamson jumpers. The Tigers continued to lead by 10 or more after five minutes, but Randolph-Macon trimmed the deficit to four, 39-35, at 13:09. The Tigers were able to maintain their lead and build it back up to nine, 48-39, at 10:20 after a Mitch Owens (Williamsburg, VA / Walsingham) three pointers off an underneath out of bounds.
Randolph-Macon would once again gradually shave points off the Tigers lead and drew within three, 55-52, at 4:53 after a Trent Walker free throw. The Tigers then came down and got their first two free throw attempts of the contest as Williamson made both attempts. H-SC secured a stop on R-MC's next possession and Williamson went to the free throw line again for a one-and-one and drained both to push the Tiger's advantage to 59-52 with 4:07 to go. Hampden-Sydney closed out the game from there by holding Randolph-Macon without a field goal the rest of the way.
First-Team All-ODACer Williamson posted game-highs of 22 points, 12 rebounds, and two blocks as he shot 9-13 from the field and 4-4 from the charity stripe. Murray stuffed the stat sheet with 10 points, seven rebounds, and five assists with just one turnover. Owens added on 10 points.
Joe Hassell paced Randolph-Macon with 14 points, 12 rebounds, and two blocks. First-Team All-ODAC member Andre Simon was limited to just eight points as he shot 1-7 from the floor. Akeem Holmes was the only other double-digit scorer for the Yellow Jackets with 10 points.
H-SC shot 48.2% overall (27-56), 46.7% from three (7-15), and went 7-9 from the foul line. R-MC was cold throughout the game, making just 32% of their field goals (16-50) and 23.5% on three pointers (4-17), but held a big 19-28 advantage at the free throw stripe.
