Cold Shooting Leads to 68-62 Loss at Carnegie Mellon

PITTSBURGH, PA - The #8 Tiger basketball team shot just 32.8% on the afternoon as Carnegie Mellon defeated Hampden-Sydney 68-62 on Sunday afternoon to win the Carnegie Mellon DoubleTree Tournament Championship. Khobi Williamson (Norfolk, VA / Maury) and Mitch Owens (Williamsburg, VA / Walsingham) were named to the All-Tournament Team.

The H-SC offense sputtered throughout the game but still managed to be in the contest throughout the game. Neither team led by more than five in the first half, but H-SC took the halftime advantage at 27-22. They scored six of the last seven points in the stanza and forced three Tartan turnovers in the last two minutes.

The Tigers led for the majority of the second half but could never gain any separation as they took a 47-40 advantage after an Owens three pointer with 8:31 remaining. Carnegie Mellon took over the game from there, using a 12-0 run over four minutes to grab a 52-47 lead with 4:42 to play. Following a Fletcher Lumpkin (Richmond, VA / Mills Godwin) layup on the next possession, Hampden-Sydney trailed by at least five the rest of the way.

Williamson tallied 16 points and nine rebounds but fouled out in 22 minutes. Mike Murray (Norfolk, VA / Norfolk Christian) posted 15 points and Owens came off the bench to score 10 points along with seven boards. 

Seth Cordts led CMU with 15 points, and Christian Manoli added on 14 points with six rebounds and four assists. Rob Mohen contributed 12 points while Asad Meghani added on 11 points, four assists, three steals, and two rebounds.

Carnegie Mellon shot 53.5% for the game, including a 64% performance after halftime. CMU went 7-20 from three range compared to a 3-22 performance from H-SC. The Tigers were very efficient from the free throw line, making 15 of 17 attempts while the Tartans struggled, shooting 13-25. H-SC dominated on the glass, collecting 20 offensive rebounds and 44 overall while CMU registered just 25 defensive rebounds and 40 overall.

Hampden-Syney stays on the road this Saturday as they travel to Bridgewater College to open ODAC play on Saturday at 2 pm.
