Box Score HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - The 14th ranked Tiger Basketball team dominated from the opening tip en route to a convincing 90-73 win against North Carolina Wesleyan to win the ACAC Fitness and Wellness Center South Region Classic.
The Tigers blitzkrieged the Battling Bishops to the tune of a 13-0 run through the first four+ minutes of action, highlighted by two consecutive three pointers from Greg Lewis (Mechanicsville, VA / Hanover). Marcus Williams came off the bench and ignited the NC Wesleyan offense with back-to-back shots from deep range to make it a 13-6 game with 14:32 left in the first half. H-SC came back with a layup and two more triples to push the advantage to 21-6 just over a minute later.
North Carolina Wesleyan got back into the contest after that, however. After Josh Morrison and Leon Hargrove (Raleigh, NC / Middle Creek) traded jumpers, the Battling Bishops scored on three layups in a row and finished off their 9-0 run with a Jesse Simpson three to trim the deficit to 23-17 at the 9:41 mark. That would prove to be the closest the game was for the rest of the night as the Tigers went into halftime up 49-29 and would go on to lead by as many as 30 following halftime.
Khobi Williamson (Norfolk, VA / Maury) posted 14 points, 11 rebounds, and two blocks while shooting 6-10 from the floor. Lewis' hot shooting continued as he scored 14 points, making four of eight three pointers. Mike Murray (Norfolk, VA / Norfolk Christian) contributed 11 points, four assists, and three boards while freshman Stephen Vassor (Roanoke Rapids, NC / Brunswick (VA)) had a strong showing of 12 points and seven caroms.
Hampden-Sydney torched the nets, making 46.4% of their threes and 48.3% overall while NCW went 35.7% from deep and 45.8% overall. The Tigers dominated the glass, outrebounding the Battling Bishops 41-20, resulting in a 25-6 advantage in second-chance points.
Hampden-Sydney hosts Wesley College on Tuesday at 5 pm.
