TIGERS CONTINUE TO ROLL WITH 73-66 WIN OVER W&L

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (January 23, 2010)—Hampden-Sydney won its second consecutive ODAC game with a 73-66 win over Washington & Lee. The Tigers are back on track and improve to 8-9 on the year and 4-5 in conference. Freshman Harrison George (Raleigh, NC/Leesville) continued to impress tying his career-high point total with a game-high 24 on 9-of-15 shooting.

Hampden-Sydney started the game well, using the first four minutes to gain a 7-2 lead at the 16:08 mark. The Generals responded with a run of their own, and outscored the Tigers 11-5 to take a 13-12 lead with 11:29 to play in the half.

George and Alex Potapov (Moscow, Russia/Florida Air) both canned two free throws to give the Tigers a three point cushion, which was then extended again by a Randall Ward (Richmond, VA/John Marshall) lay up.

The Tigers pulled away by as much as seven at the 6:46 mark with a 26-19 lead, but Washington and Lee continued to hang around and two Zac White free throws cut the lead to just three at 26-23 with just under four minutes until the half.

Hampden-Sydney again pulled away to go up seven, but with four more General free throws brought the game back to a three point differential, but Turner King (Roanoke, VA/Roanoke Catholic) ended the half with two free throws to give the Tigers a 34-29 lead at intermission.

The Tigers started off the second half much like the first by outscoring W&L 8-3 to take a 42-32 lead with 16:47 remaining in the game.

Hampden-Sydney continued to push, and after Karlis Trops (Riga, Latvia/Charlotte Latin) converted an old-fashioned three point play, Hampden-Sydney controlled a 53-36 lead with 11:31 to play. TwoPatrick Corrigan (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) free throws extended the lead to 57-39, but it was then that the Generals began to creep back into the game.

Over the next seven minutes, Washington & Lee steadily outscored the Tigers 21-5, to pull themselves within two points at 62-60.

George did all he could in that stretch, scoring eight straight points for Hampden-Sydney including a lay up to give his team a 67-62 lead with just over two minutes to play.

The Tigers buckled down on defense over the final two minutes, holding Washington and Lee to just four points while claiming the 73-66 lead.

On the day, Hampden-Sydney was 24-54 (44.4%) from the field and 4-15 (26.7%) from beyond the arc. Washington and Lee was 23-46 (50%) on the day and hit seven of its 20 three point attempts.

George again led all scorers with 24 points while adding seven rebounds. King pitched in with 11 points while Trops and Ward each added eight points.

The Generals were led by Zac White and Ben Goetsch who scored 15 and 14 points, respectively.

The Tigers were out rebounded 32-31 but had 16 turnovers to the General's 21.

The Tigers return home this Wednesday, January 27, as they face the Wildcats of Randolph College. Tip off is set for 7:00 pm.
