SALEM, Va. (February 29, 2008) --- Tigers' senior forward Troy Kaase (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) made up for his lost 2007 with one shot on Saturday night as his tip-in with three seconds remaining sent Hampden-Sydney College past Randolph-Macon College, 69-67, in the final quarterfinal match-up ODAC Men's Basketball Tournament. The Tigers, now 15-11, move on to face Virginia Wesleyan College in the semifinals on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets bow out with a 20-6 record.
Coming out of a timeout with 31 seconds left, the Tigers worked the clock down to about five seconds before Turner King (Roanoke, VA/Roanoke Catholic) triggered a jumper that went off the back iron. Kaase, who missed almost all of last season because of injury, tipped in the miss with two hands to give the Tigers their first and only lead of the game. A 40-foot three-pointer by Justin Short drew iron, but fell harmlessly to the floor to secure H-SC's win.
Kaase finished with a team-high 22 points and 15 rebounds. Turner King scored 11 of his 18 points in the final seven minutes of play. Senior guard Drew Prehmus (Atlanta, GA/Wesleyan) added 14 points before fouling out of the contest.
Short led all scorers with 24 points including a 6-for-11 showing beyond the arc. Jeremy Dixon and Jordan Brown added 11 points each. Dixon also pulled down nine rebounds.
Randolph-Macon shot 50-percent from the field in the first half on the way to a 17-point halftime lead. Short connected on four shots from distance for 13 point The Jackets' lead hit 19 points early in the latter frame, but Hampden-Sydney went on the first of its three runs to cut it to 9 points with 14:51 to play.
The score hovered for a minutes before H-SC went on a second run. The Tigers moved to within one at 46-45 with 10:03 to play, but Randolph-Macon responded with a spurt of its own to push its lead back out to 56-47 with 7:55 showing on the clock.
One more H-SC run brought the game within reach for the game's final sequence in the closing seconds of the contest.
