HAMPDEN-SYDNEY EARNS THIRD STRAIGHT WIN WITH AN 83-64 VICTORY OVER LYNCHBURG

LYNCHBURG, VA (February 20, 2008)�Hampden-Sydney's basketball team extended its winning streak to three games as the Tigers scored an 83-64 victory over Lynchburg College on Wednesday night at Turner Gymnasium in Lynchburg, VA. The Tigers shot 60.8 percent from field and 45.8 percent from three-point range, making 11-of-24 shots from behind-the-arc to defeat the Hornets. Senior forward Troy Kaase (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) led all scorers with a 24 point performance on 12-of-15 shooting from the field, while senior guard Drew Prehmus (Atlanta, GA/Wesleyan School) had a double-double with 20 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. With the win, Hampden-Sydney improves to 14-10 overall and 8-9 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, while Lynchburg drops to 3-21 on the season and 1-16 in the league.

Hampden-Sydney opened the game with an 8-3 run in the first minute and a half of the game before the Hornets cut the lead to two points, 6-8, at the 17:22 mark. The Tigers and Hornets would battle back-and-forth as the Tigers maintained a slight advantage through much of the first half. Leading 22-18, Hampden-Sydney went on a 20-4 run over the final eight minutes of the first half, capped off by a lay-in by Kaase, to take a 42-22 lead into halftime.

In the early portions of the second half, the Tigers maintained their lead, holding a 53-35 advantage with 15:01 left to play. Lynchburg cut the lead to 14 points, 64-50, with 6:52 remaining on a lay-up by Steven Echols, but the Tigers would push the lead back to 19 points with less than four minutes remaining. Over the final four minutes, the Tigers would take a 23-point lead and go on for the 83-64 victory.

Hampden-Sydney had three players score in double-figures, led by Kaase with 24 points and nine rebounds, while senior Drew Prehmus recorded a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Turner King (Roanoke, VA/Roanoke Catholic) finished with 13 points, while Hakeem Croom (Harlem, NY/Fishburne Military Academy) scored a career-high four points in just two minutes of action. Lynchburg was led by Mason Woolridge who scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds, while Steven Echols added 13 points and nine rebounds. Kwame Safo and Evan Fancourt also finished in double-figures with 10 points apiece.

The Tigers shot 60.8 (31-of-51) percent from the field, including 45.8 (11-of-24) percent from behind-the-arc and 62.5 (10-of-16) percent from the charity stripe. Lynchburg finished the game at 34.2 percent from the field and 13.8 percent from three-point range, making just 4-of-29 shots from behind-the-arc. The Hornets were a perfect 10-for-10 from the foul line. The Tigers out-rebounded the Hornets, 39-34.
