BASKETBALL TIGERS HONOR SENIORS WITH 73-48 WIN OVER W&L

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (February 18, 2008)�The Hampden-Sydney basketball team honored four seniors before Monday night's game and then sent them out with a 73-48 victory over Washington and Lee in their final game at S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium. Seniors Drew Prehmus (Atlanta, GA/Wesleyan School) and Troy Kaase (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring)finished in double-figures with 21 and 16 points respectively. Injured forward Tyler Murray (Atlanta, GA/Harrison) and manager Davis Yake (Severna Park, MD/Severn School) were also honored as part of senior night. The Tigers shot 58.3 percent from the field and 45.0 from behind-the-arc, while holding the Generals to 35.4 percent from the field and only 15.8 percent from three. With the win, the Tigers improved to 13-10 on the season and 7-9 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, while the Generals dropped to 14-9 overall and 10-6 in the league.

In the early portions of the first half, Hampden-Sydney and Washington and Lee traded baskets before the Generals took a four-point advantage, 15-11. With the game tied, 16-16, at the 10:08 mark, Hampden-Sydney went on a 12-1 run to build a 28-17 lead with 5:31 remaining until halftime. The Tigers continued to increase their lead, taking a 15-point advantage, 37-22, on a pair of free throws by sophomore Karlis Trops (Riga, Latvia/Charlotte Latin), but Washington and Lee's Greg Bienemann made a lay-up with 54 seconds remaining to cut the Tigers' halftime lead to 13 points, 37-24.

Hampden-Sydney continued to build their lead early in the second period, claiming a 43-26 lead on a jumper by sophomore Turner King (Roanoke, VA/Roanoke Catholic) with 16:20 left to play. The Generals refused to go away as Washington and Lee cut the Tiger advantage to 12 points, 43-31, with 15:14 remaining, but the Tigers answered, building a 23 point lead, 65-42, with just 6:12 left to play. The Tigers took their largest lead of the game, 71-46, on a pair of free throw by Drew Prehmus and went on for the 73-48 victory.

Senior Drew Prehmus led Hampden-Sydney with a game-high 21 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore Turner King finished with 18 points. Senior Troy Kaase finished with 16 points and seven rebounds, while Karlis Trops scored six points, grabbed eight rebounds, and dished out five assists. Washington and Lee was led by Femi Kusimo as he scored 16 points, while Isaiah Goodman chipped in with 12 points.

For the game, the Tigers shot 58.3 percent (28-of-48) from the field, 45.0 percent (9-of-20) from three-point range, and 88.9 percent (8-of-9) from the foul line. Washington and Lee shot 35.4 percent from the field, and just 15.8 percent on 3-of-19 shooting from three point range, and 64.7 percent from the foul line. The Tigers held a decisive advantage on the boards, 37-18, including 13 offensive rebounds.

Hampden-Sydney will return to action on Wednesday, February 20, as the Tigers will travel to Lynchburg, VA to take on ODAC-foe Lynchburg College at Turner Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm. Fans can also catch all the exciting hardwood action on WFLO 95.7 FM or www.hsc.edu.
