Coach Ray Rostan recently concluded his 37th and final season as a head collegiate coach in 2015-16, the last 32 at Hampden-Sydney. Ray Rostan established one of the most successful lacrosse programs nationally. Coach Rostan won his 300th career win on February 16, 2013. In the NCAA record books, among all active collegiate coaches within all three NCAA Divisions, he ranked 8th all-time in career wins upon retirement and fourth in Division III.

The 2016 team reached the ODAC Tournament Semifinals as the #3 seed, posting a 12-5 mark in the regular season (13-6 overall) and a 7-2 record within the ODAC. The 13 wins tied the school single-season win record while the seven ODAC wins set a new school single-season record. The Tigers defeated the 2015 national runner up Lynchburg College 13-9 on Senior Day. Thomas Passenant and Jake Koferl earned All-American honors and Passenant was named a USILA Scholar All-American.

Rostan's final season proved to be one of the statistically best offensive teams he has ever coached, with school single-season rankings of third in points, second in goals, and third in assists. Ian Levin finished the year with the ninth most points in a single season, Hunter Brown tallied the fifth most assists in a season, and Brown and Koferl finished in the top 10 for single season midfielder points.

In December of 2015, Rostan was honored with the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association's Frenchy Julien Service Award at the National USLCA/USILA Coaches Convention. The award is in honor of former Chief Referee, Joseph R. Frenchy Julien and is annually awarded to an individual that has rendered a lifetime of service, accomplishments and contributions to the sport of lacrosse.

In 2014, the Hampden-Sydney ODAC Finalist Tiger team, was awarded the James “Ace” Adams Sportsmanship award by the National Intercollegiate Lacrosse Officials Association for District 4, including all colleges and universities in Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina.

In 2002, Rostan served as Assistant Coach and Defensive Coordinator for the U.S. National Lacrosse Team which won the World Lacrosse Championships in Perth, Australia. Rostan was the 1998 and 1989 recipient of the Francis “Babe” Kraus Memorial Award, after being voted the National Coach of the Year by his peers. He is the first Division III coach to win the award twice. Rostan has been voted Old Dominion Athletic Conference Coach of the Year five times, most recently in 2016. 

In 2004, Coach Rostan’s senior classes tied a school record (set by the 2003 senior class) with 44 career victories while participating in three NCAA Tournaments in a four-year period. In 2003, the Tiger’s lacrosse team was nationally ranked third for most of the regular season, finishing the year with a seventh-place national ranking. The 2003 Tigers finished with a 12-3 overall mark, while completing the ODAC regular season undefeated for the second straight year and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament with a 10-8 victory over third-seeded Washington College.

Rostan’s seventh NCAA appearance came during the 2002 season as he led the Tigers to a 13-3 record and a No. 3 ranking in the final poll of the regular season. The team completed a 6-0 record against ODAC competition during the regular season and hosted the first-ever ODAC Men’s Lacrosse Tournament Championship game.

Coach Rostan has had 63 USILA All-American selections at Hampden-Sydney, including five on the first team, and ten USILA Scholar All-Americans. Thirteen Lacrosse Tigers have been inducted into the H-SC Athletic Hall of Fame. First team All-American Jeff Jackson ‘87 also played on the 1990 USA Team. In 1998, Dr. Jamie Worthen was the National Player of the Year at Defense. In 2000 Tom Oast earned First-Team honors. Jason Rostan garnered First-Team All-American and ODAC Player of the Year honors in 2002. Senior defensemen Chris Biddison was named 1st Team All-American in 2003. Chris was a three-time All-American at H-SC.

In 2015, senior midfielder Thomas Armstrong earned All-American honors for his third time, entering H-SC’s all-time record books as only the 8th student-athlete to achieve this honor amongst all sports. Thomas joins two other H-SC Lacrosse student-athletes in this category, Jamie Worthen (1998) and Chris Biddison (2003). Most recently, 2003 graduate Jason Rostan and 2008 graduate and Third-Team All-American Alex Pritzlaff were drafted by the MLL Denver Outlaws. Ryan Harrington, a 2007 graduate and Second-Team All-American, earned a position on the New Jersey Pride. 

Rostan was a member of the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Committee representing Division I-II and III of NCAA Collegiate Lacrosse from 1998 through 2003. He also served as the Chair of the USILA Men’s North-South game for ten years. Coach Rostan served Hampden-Sydney as the advisor to the NCAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for ten years, from 2001 through 2011. He formerly served the USILA Committee for Coaching Ethics. In his 31 years of service to the College, Rostan has also served as the Head Coach of the Water Polo Team (Division III Final Eight in 1993), Soccer Assistant Coach, and acted as the Leggett Swimming Pool Manager.

The Copiague (Long Island), New York native earned his B.S. in 1973 from Cortland State University and his M.S. from Ithaca College in 1977. Rostan was a member of the 1973 Cortland State National Championship team. He later played professionally in the National Lacrosse League for the 1974 National Lacrosse League Champion Rochester Griffins and for the Long Island Tomahawks in 1975.

Coach Rostan and his wife Karen of 37 years have two children, Jamie and Jason. Karen has served the College for the past 20 years as the Purchasing Agent for the H-SC Bookstore. Jamie, a 2005 graduate of the University of Mary Washington, captained the women’s lacrosse team. Jamie married her husband, Luke Davis, in June 2015 and are now recently gave birth to a son, Harrison Davis.

Jason Rostan has served Hampden-Sydney College as the Assistant Lacrosse Coach since he graduated from H-SC in 2003 and has succeeded his father as Head Coach of the Tigers. Jason was inducted into the Hampden-Sydney College Athletics Hall of Fame in October of 2015. Jason’s wife Amy is a Guidance Counselor. Jason and Amy have a three-year-old daughter, Carter Rostan.
