George “Deke” Summers ’67 is in his second year as an assistant football coach at Hampden-Sydney College during 2025-26, serving as the senior offensive consultant and assistant quarterbacks coach. He was a four-year starter with the Tigers, first as a defensive back and later as a quarterback.
H-SC led the ODAC in passing efficiency (145.1) during 2024, and had a Third Team All-ODAC selection at quarterback who led the ODAC in passing touchdowns (22) and passing efficiency (152.5), was third in passing yards (1,842), passing yards per game (204.7) and total offense per game (227.1), and fourth in completion percentage (59.9).
Summers helped the program to a four-year record of 23-14-1, leading the team to a come-from-behind victory over an undefeated Randolph-Macon team his senior season with a late touchdown pass to Randy Edwards ’69 for the victory. Summers enjoyed a 25-year career as a head coach and assistant coach at several high schools in the Roanoke/Lynchburg area, beginning as a young assistant on the Andrew Lewis High School team that lost to T.C. Williams (“Remember the Titans”) in the 1971 Virginia Class AAA State Championship and highlighted by a 35-game unbeaten streak and back-to-back state championships at Brookville High School in Lynchburg as part of a staff that included Jeff Woody ’00 and Jamar Lovelace ’10. At Brookville, he coached Tiger All-American and 2024 Athletic Hall of Fame inductee Holton Walker ’15.
Deke is still actively involved in a mailing services/printing company that he founded in Roanoke and as a developer in the Lynchburg area.
