HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Senior
Ubaid Wasi (Meherrin), along with freshmen
Max Hanger (Richmond) and
Nate White (Virginia Beach), scored as Hampden-Sydney College beat Batten University 3-1 in a non-conference clash on Wednesday night at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.
The Marlins jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter, scoring off a corner after just six minutes and 54 seconds came off the clock. The Tigers had two shots saved during the rest of the half, but were unable to find the breakthrough goal and trailed 1-0 going into halftime.
It took just over 12 minutes into the second half, but H-SC found the breakthrough it was looking for, when senior
Mo Wumpini (Chattanooga, TN) ran onto a pass from senior
Jason Trujillo (North Lauderdale, FL) and, from the left wing, played the ball back to the middle edge of the box to find White, who struck the ball first-time and blasted it into the bottom right corner. Less than 10 minutes later, the Tigers found themselves up a man when the Marlins got a red card, which they immediately capitalized on, as Wasi was able to tap in the rebound of the saved header by junior
Gavin Edington (Clayton, NC) less than a minute later to take the lead. H-SC had one more goal in it before the final whistle came, as in the 82nd minute, a ball caromed off a Batten defender and Hanger hit the ball first time from the right edge of the box into the bottom left corner for his first career goal, and secured the Tigers a 3-1 win.
H-SC had the edge in shots (15-7) and shots on target (8-4) on the evening.
Sophomore
Stig Larson (Richmond) earned his sixth win of the season in net, making three saves.
The Tigers will be back in action when they open Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play on the road against Guilford (NC) College on Saturday, September 26. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Armfield Athletic Center.
