Casey Coffey (Midlothian) and sophomore
Emerson Rice (Columbia, SC) both earned singles and doubles victories to help lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 5-2 win over Olivet Nazarene (IL) University to open its spring break trip.
Coffey and Rice teamed up to earn the lone doubles victory for the Tigers from the second slot with a commanding 6-1 result. Senior
Dillon McReynolds (Abingdon) and junior
Thomas Davis (Charlotte, NC) were beaten in the top doubles match 6-2, while sophomore
Jonathan Fogle (Midlothian) and freshman
Slade Funderburk (Camden, SC) fell 6-4 in the third doubles match.
Singles action saw H-SC grab control of the match after falling behind 1-0 after doubles, starting with the McReynolds in the second singles match, who jumped out to an early lead with a 6-2 set one win, before narrowly falling in the second set 7-5. In the final set, he won the tiebreaker 10-6 to take the match 6-2, 5-7, 1(10)-0(6). Rice earned his singles victory from the third slot, taking the first set 7-5, and the second set 6-4, while Coffey took victory in the number four singles with two straight 6-4 set wins. Fogle took a win in the fifth slot, battling to a 7-5 first set win before cruising to a 6-0 win in the second set. Freshman
Sam Robinson (Charlotte, NC) won from the sixth singles, winning both sets by a 6-3 scoreline. Davis dropped his first set in the top singles match 6-2 before dropping the second set 6-4 to drop the match.
The Tigers will be back in action on Tuesday, March 10, when they play two matches, starting at 8 a.m. against Otterbein (OH) University and then wrapping up with a 1 p.m. match against West Chester (PA) University.
