BOX SCORE GAME 1 | BOX SCORE GAME 2

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Sophomore third baseman Kennen Lewis (Dry Fork) had a hit and scored two runs in game one, and senior right fielder and team captain Chase Sanford (Mechanicsville) had two hits and five RBIs in game two, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped both games of an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball doubleheader at home to nationally-ranked No. 6 Shenandoah University on Saturday afternoon on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark - Wurdeman Stadium. Sophomore right-hander Brady Wilson (Virginia Beach) started and took the pitching decision in the 25-6, seven-inning run-rule opener, while senior right-hander and team captain Alex Fitz-Hugh (Chesterfield) took the mound decision in relief in the 10-8 nightcap. The host Tigers dropped to 10-14 overall, including 4-6 in the ODAC, while the visiting Hornets improved to 22-4 overall, including 7-4 in the ODAC.

In game one, H-SC scored six runs on six hits with three errors … scoring three runs each in the sixth and seventh innings. SU scored 25 runs on 21 hits with one error … scoring two runs in the first inning, three runs in the second, four runs in the third, three runs in the fourth, 11 runs in the sixth and two runs in the seventh.

In the sixth, Lewis (1-1, RBI) was hit by a pitch to open the at-bat while pinch-hitting, advanced to second on a passed ball and on to third via a wild pitch. Walks to both Sanford (1-3, RBI) and junior catcher Noah Leonard (Troutville), who was also pinch-hitting, loaded the bases with no outs. Lewis crossed the plate courtesy of another wild pitch that advanced Sanford and Leonard a base, as well, and Sanford scored on a sacrifice fly RBI to center field by senior center fielder and team captain Jack Wilson (Petersburg) (RBI). Leonard scored on another sacrifice fly RBI, this one to right field off the bat of senior designated hitter Matthew Arnold (Danville) (RBI) for a 23-3 deficit.

In the seventh, sophomore Gavin Smith (Mechanicsville) (1-1) led-off with a double down the right field line while pinch-hitting, scoring on an RBI single to right field by senior left fielder and team captain Greer Farr (Southern Shores, NC) (1-3, RBI) with one out. Farr advanced to second on a wild pitch and then crossed the plate when Lewis followed with a run-scoring double to left field, and Lewis crossed the plate when Sanford added an RBI single to left field to provide for the final margin.

Brady Wilson (4-3) started on the mound for the Garnet & Grey and pitched the first 2.2 innings for the decision, allowing 10 hits and nine runs, seven earned, with one strikeout and two walks. Freshman right-hander Hayden Bynum (Richmond) recorded two outs, yielding one hit and three runs, all earned, with no strikeouts and four walks. Sanford (2-3, 5 RBIs) plated both runners with a one-out, two-run single through the right side for a 7-2 deficit.

In the fourth, Lewis (1-2) singled through the left side and scored on a one-out RBI double to right center field by freshman shortstop Mason Lester (Lawrence, KS) (2-4, RBI). Following a walk to Leonard, Jack Wilson singled to right center field to load the bases, and Lester crossed the plate when sophomore designated hitter Connor Powell (Midlothian) (2-5, RBI) singled to right field. After a pitching change, Sanford promptly slammed a three-run double to left center field that scored Leonard, Jack Wilson and Powell to tie the contest at 7-7.
