Jonathan Fogle (Midlothian) and freshman
Slade Funderburk (Camden, SC) took singles and doubles victories to help lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 5-2 win over Roanoke College to open Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) competition on Friday afternoon.
Fogle and Funderburk took their doubles victory together in the third slot with a 6-3 result. Senior
Casey Coffey (Midlothian) and sophomore
Emerson Rice (Columbia, SC) earned H-SC the doubles point with their 6-2 win in the second doubles slot. In the top doubles slot, senior
Dillon McReynolds (Abingdon) and junior
Thomas Davis (Charlotte, NC) fell 6-3.
Davis grabbed a win from the top singles spot, after falling behind early with a 6-1 first set defeat, he battled back with back-to-back 6-2 set wins to take his match 1-6, 6-2, 6-2. McReynolds grabbed a victory in the second doubles slot, after he jumped out to a lead with a 6-3 set one win, and followed it up with a 7-0 tiebreaker win to take the second set 7(7)-6(0). Fogle earned his singles victory for the number five spot, taking a 6-2 set one win and sweeping the second set 6-0 to take the match. Funderburk also jumped out to a 6-2 first set victory from the sixth singles slot and followed it up with a 6-1 second set win. Rice was the Tiger in the third singles position, where he dropped the first set 6-4, and the second 6-3 to drop his match, while Coffey fell 6-4, 6-0 in the fourth spot.
The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday, March 21, when they travel to Greensboro, North Carolina, to take on Guilford (NC) College at 12 p.m. at the Dorothy Ragsdale McMichael '37 Centennial Class Courts
