ORLANDO, Fl. -- Sophomore James Woerner (Kill Devil Hills, NC) took a singles victory, while senior Casey Coffey (Midlothian), sophomore Emerson Rice (Columbia, SC), and freshmen Slade Funderburk (Camden, SC) and Sam Robinson (Charlotte, NC) earned doubles victories, but Hampden-Sydney College fell to Wheaton (MA) College on Wednesday afternoon.

Coffey and Rice got things rolling from the number two doubles slot, taking a 6-3 victory. Funderburk and Robinson followed it up in the number three doubles with a 6-1 victory to earn H-SC the doubles point. Senior Dillon McReynolds (Abingdon) and junior Thomas Davis (Charlotte, NC) competed for the Tigers in the top doubles spot and dropped their match 6-0.

Woerner was the lone Tiger to take a singles victory in the match, taking a 6-3 first-set victory and following it up with a 7-5 win in set two. Other than Woerner, Funderburk was the only other Tiger to not play three sets, as he fell in the first set 6-3, before dropping a tight 7-5 second set. Davis fell behind in his match in the top singles slot with a 6-3 defeat in set one, but bounced back with a 6-3 victory in set two to force the set three tiebreaker. In the final set, he fell 10-5 to drop the match 3-6, 6-3, 0(5)-1(10). Rice jumped out to an early lead in his match, 6-3, but fell in the second set, 6-4, before falling 10-2 in the tiebreaker to drop his match 6-3, 4-6, 0(2)-1(10). Sophomore Jonathan Fogle (Midlothian) fell behind early in his match with a 6-1 first set loss, but battled back with a 6-4 set two win before falling 10-5 in the third set tiebreaker to fall 1-6, 6-4, 0(5)-1(10). Robinson was the final Tiger to go three sets, jumping out to an early lead with a commanding 6-1 win in set one, but fell 6-3 in the second set before falling 10-3 in the third set tiebreaker to fall 6-1, 3-6, 0(3)-1(10).
