Hampden-Sydney Falls To Washington (MD) 5-2

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Senior Casey Coffey (Midlothian) took victories in both singles and doubles, but Hampden-Sydney College fell to Washington (MD) College 5-2 on Sunday morning at Boonsboro Country Club.
 
The Tigers got off to a great start in the match, sweeping doubles to earn an early one-point lead. Senior Dillon McReynolds (Abingdon) and junior Thomas Davis (Charlotte, NC) got things rolling in the top doubles slot, winning a tiebreaker 11-9 to take the match 7(11)-6(9). Coffey and his partner, sophomore Emerson Rice (Columbia, SC), followed them in the second doubles slot, and also came out victorious in a tiebreaker 7-5 to take their match 7(7)-6(5). The final doubles match saw sophomore Jonathan Fogle (Midlothian) and freshman Slade Funderburk (Camden, SC) take a 7-1 tiebreaker win to take their doubles match 7(7)-6(1).
 
Coffey took his singles win in the fourth slot, after dropping set one 6-4, he rebounded to take a 6-4 win in the second set and force a third set tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, he dominated to secure a 10-1 win and take the match 4-6, 6-4, 1(10)-0(1). Davis fell in the top singles slot, dropping the first set 6-4, and the second 6-3, while McReynolds dropped his first set in the second slot 6-4, and the second 6-2 to drop the match. In the third singles slot, Rice dropped his first set 6-1 and fell in the match when he dropped set two 6-2. Fogle battled to a tough 7-5 first set loss before dropping the second set 6-4 to fall in the match. The final singles match featured freshman Sam Robinson (Charlotte, NC), who took a commanding 6-1 first set victory but fell in the second set 6-4 to force a third set. In the third set tiebreaker, he fell 10-4 to drop the match 6-1, 4-6, 0(4)-1(10).
 
The Tigers will be back in action on Wednesday, March 4, when they play host to William Peace (NC) University at 4 p.m. at the H-SC Tennis Courts.
