HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Junior
Kavin Wood (
Cary, NC) scored once but helped set up three goals, while sophomore
Cole Palmer (Atlanta, GA) scored twice and assisted on another, but Hampden-Sydney College fell to nationally-ranked No. 3 Christopher Newport University 10-7 on Saturday afternoon at Lewis C. Everett Stadium.
The Captains opened the scoring with a goal in the first two minutes, then doubled their tally at the 7:02 mark to take a 2-0 lead. The Tigers just over three minutes later cut the lead in half as Wood found Palmer up top, who took two steps to his right and fired a shot past the keeper. Christopher Newport added one more goal right before the end of the quarter to take a 3-1 lead into the second.
Palmer cut the lead down to one once again to get the scoring started in the second quarter, as he picked up the ground ball after sophomore
Broder Conley (Duluth, GA) had his shot blocked and put it into the right side of the net. The Captains responded, scoring 15 seconds later and then doubling their second-quarter tally less than a minute later to take a three-goal lead. Off a caused turnover by senior
Tyler Steele (Pinehurst, NC), the Tigers were able to get out in transition, where junior
Cameron Van Lunen (Southern Shores, NC) found Conley on the right wing, who fired a bounced shot into the right side of the net. H-SC was not done in the quarter, as senior
Cameron Young (Chantilly) picked up the ground ball following his caused turnover and found Conley in transition, who found Palmer, who quickly found Wood all by himself to put it top shelf and make it 5-4 at halftime.
Following the halftime break, Christopher Newport responded to the two unanswered by the Tigers before the break, scoring twice in the first five minutes to regain its two-goal cushion. It would take until just past the five-minute mark, but H-SC answered as Wood sped past the defense on a clear attempt, finding freshman
Trevor Maham (Lorton) open to his right, where he took a couple of steps and fired home his first collegiate goal. The Captains answered right back with two more before sophomore
Nick Winchell (Wilmington, DE) found freshman
Brown Parker (Raleigh, NC) open up top, and he rifled a left-handed sidearm shot through the goalie's legs on the man-advantage for his first collegiate goal to make it 9-6 going into the fourth.
Christopher Newport got the scoring started at the 7:44 mark of the fourth quarter, taking a four-goal lead before H-SC got an answer just over four minutes later, when Wood found senior
Patrick Hanes (Raleigh, NC) streaking wide open to the next for the catch and finish. The Tigers got one more shot off in the final 3:40, but had it saved, ultimately falling 10-7 to Christopher Newport.
Wood led the Tigers offensively on the afternoon, scoring once with three assists. Palmer was the leading scorer for H-SC with two goals and one assist. Hanes, Conley, Maham, and Parker each scored a goal, with Winchell and Van Lunen each tallying an assist.
Defensively, freshman
Jackson Cooling (Raleigh, NC) had a great debut, causing a game-high four turnovers. Junior
Jack Duffy (Ambler, PA) caused three turnovers, Van Lunen and Young caused two, and Steele caused one.
Senior goalie
Will Palmer (Atlanta, GA) made 13 saves in the loss.
The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday, February 14, when they travel to North Carolina to take on Pfeiffer University. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Lefko-Mills Field.
