Shane Fernald (Charlotte, NC) had 14 points, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 73-64 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's basketball home win past Shenandoah University on Saturday afternoon on the new Tony Shaver Court in Diaz Arena at the renovated Kirby Field House. The host Tigers led 37-34 at halftime and maintained their advantage in the second half before outscoring the visitors 12-6 over the final 2:37 toward the victory. Senior guard
Davis Cauble (Richmond) added a career-high nine points off the bench, including 3-3 three-point field goals, while sophomore guard
Travis Stickney (Mount Pleasant, SC) had game-highs of 10 rebounds and five assists. H-SC improved to 13-8 overall, 7-5 in the ODAC, while SU dropped to 11-10 overall, 4-8 in the ODAC. The visiting Hornets were led by Ellis Wright with a game-high 23 points, while Dorian Davis added 19 points and six rebounds.

H-SC scored the first basket of the game when junior guard
William Britt (Richmond) made a layup at 18:52, assisted by Bizzelle, and the Tigers led 7-4 at 16:52 after Bizzelle added a layup of his own along with a three-pointer. SU used a 15-6 run to lead 19-13 at 10:05, getting three-pointers from both Ellis Wright and Davis. The Garnet & Grey battled back with a 15-2 run to lead 28-21 with 5:35 left in the opening half, as Cauble connected on a pair of three-pointers, while Bizzelle added four points and senior guard/forward
Kolby Wright (Cookeville, TN) also made a three-pointer. The Hornets rallied again and a three-pointer by Davis had the visitors ahead 31-30 at 3:20, but that would be their last lead of the contest … with Fernald scoring seven late points for a 37-34 advantage at the intermission.
H-SC continued its momentum to begin the second half, extending the lead to 45-36 with 14:33 remaining, as sophomore guard
Peter Moye (Charlotte, NC) and Stickney each had a free throw,
Kolby Wright connected on another three-pointer and Bizzelle completed an old-fashioned three-point play. SU was able to close within 47-46 at 11:15 following a layup by Ellis Wright, who also made another three-pointer during the quick 10-2 run. That was as close as the visitors would get, however, as the Tigers got a free throw from Fernald, another three-pointer from Cauble and
a layup from Bizzelle to lead 53-47 with 8:03 on the clock. The Hornets made a final push and was within 57-55 at 4:53 after another three-pointer by Davis, and were within 61-58 at 3:43 after an old-fashioned three-point play by Ellis Wright. The Garnet & Grey, however, closed strong and outscored their visitors 12-6 over the final 3:24 … with Moye making a three-pointer followed by a layup from Fernald, another three-point play by Bizzelle, as well as a layup and two free throws by freshman guard
Tyree White (Indian Trail, NC) toward the final margin of victory.
Bizzelle led H-SC with his career-high-tying 19 points, adding his game-high five assists along with four rebounds and two steals. Fernald finished with his 14 points for the Tigers. Cauble contributed his career-high nine points, including 3-3 three-pointers, adding career-highs of four rebounds, three assists and three steals, also a game-high, in 17 minutes off the bench. Stickney had his game-highs of 10 rebounds and five assists, while
Kolby Wright, Cannon, Moye and White each added six points. H-SC shot 44% (24-55) from the field, including 27% (7-26) on three-pointers, and 82% (18-22) at the free throw line. The Tigers enjoyed advantages of 15-3 on points off turnovers, 34-22 on points in the paint and 27-9 in bench points.
Ellis Wright led SU with his game-high 23 points, adding a game-high two blocks. Davis finished with 19 points and six rebounds for the Hornets. SU shot 42% (22-52) from the field, including 32% (9-28) on three-pointers, and 73% (11-15) at the line.
H-SC plays on the road next week at ODAC member the University of Lynchburg on Wednesday, February 11, at 7 p.m. in Lynchburg.
