(RV)Hampden-Sydney Falls On The Road At St. Mary's (MD) 14-8

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. -- Sophomore Cole Palmer (Atlanta, GA) scored four goals and added an assist, but Hampden-Sydney College fell to St. Mary's College of Maryland 14-8 on Friday night at Jamie L. Roberts Stadium.

The Tigers got the scoring started two minutes and 21 seconds into the contest, as senior Davis Mack (Henrico) swung the ball from up top to the left wing, finding Palmer for the catch and fire finish. The Seahawks responded to even the game before Palmer doubled his tally to give H-SC back the lead. St. Mary's knotted the game up once more before Palmer got his hat trick on the man advantage when senior Patrick Hanes (Raleigh, NC) found him on the right wing. The Seahawks, though, answered one more time in the quarter, scoring with four seconds remaining to tie the game at three going into the second quarter.

The Seahawks opened the scoring in the second quarter to take their first lead of the evening, but just over a minute later, the Tigers responded with a goal off a turnover, as on the break, Palmer found junior Kavin Wood (Cary, NC) on the left side of the net for the goal. The final 11:06 of the second quarter saw both sides unable to break the deadlock as the game went to halftime tied at four.

After going scoreless for over 12 minutes, St. Mary's wasted no time getting on the board to start the third quarter, finding the back of the net after 41 seconds, and then doubling its tally just over a minute later. H-SC cut into the lead one minute and three seconds later, as freshman Max Schneider (Woodford) beat his man and found sophomore Broder Conley (Duluth, GA) open in front of the crease for the catch and finish. The Seahawks responded, scoring again at the 11:18 mark to push the lead back to two. H-SC answered the goal, with one of its own on the man advantage, as sophomore Nick Winchell (Wilmington, DE) found Hanes on the left side, who ripped a sidearm shot into the back of the net. St. Mary's answered once again to restore the two-goal advantage with its own man-up goal. The Seahawks added three more to close the quarter and led H-SC 11-6 with 15 minutes remaining.

The Tigers got the scoring started in the fourth, as Mack netted his first of the evening to cut into the deficit. After three unanswered by the Seahawks, the Tigers clawed one back with 1:51 remaining, as Palmer took on two defenders and muscled home a shot. The Tigers had a few more chances in the final 1:51 but were unable to find the back of the net and fell 14-8.

Palmer had a game-high four goals while adding an assist. Hanes and Mack each had a goal and an assist, while Wood and Conley scored once. Winchell and Schneider both had one assist.

Senior Will Palmer (Atlanta, GA) made 13 saves in the losing effort.

The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday, March 7, when they open Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play on the road against rival Randolph-Macon College. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Day Field.
