Thomas Davis (Charlotte, NC)Â had a single and doubles victory, but Hampden-Sydney College fell to Belmont Abbey (NC) College on Wednesday afternoon at the Reidy Tennis Center.

H-SC got off to a good start in the match, taking victories in two of the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Davis and his partner, senior
Dillon McReynolds (Abingdon), took a 6-3 win in the top doubles slot, while senior
Casey Coffey (Midlothian) and sophomore
Emerson Rice (Columbia, SC) took a 6-4 victory from the second slot. Freshman
Slade Funderburk (Camden, SC)Â and freshman
Sam Robinson (Charlotte, NC)Â fell 6-3 in the final doubles match.

Davis battled to a first set victory in the top singles match, being pushed to a tiebreaker, which he won 7-5 to take the first set 7(7)-6(5). He then followed it up with a much easier 6-3 win in the second set to take the match. Funderburk earned his first career singles victory in the sixth slot, taking an early advantage with a 6-4 win in the first set, and then followed it with a 6-3 second set victory to take a 6-4, 6-3 win. McReynolds was the Tiger in the second singles slot, and jumped out to an early lead with a 6-2 win in the first set, but dropped his second set 6-4 to force an all-important third and final set. In the final set, he lost the 10-point tiebreak 10-7 to drop the match 6-2, 4-6, 0(7)-1(10). The third singles slot saw Rice fall in the first set 6-2, and drop the second 6-0 to drop the match, with Coffey in the fourth slot dropping his match 6-1, 6-0. The final match was the fifth singles, where Robinson fell 6-2 in the first set, but battled to a close second set loss 7-5.

The Tigers will be back in action on Sunday, February 22, when they play host to William Peace (NC) University. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at the H-SC Tennis Courts.
