Hampden-Sydney Defeats Grove City (PA) 16-12 In Joe Ferebee Classic

Junior first baseman and team captain Jase Howell (Portsmouth) had career-highs of four hits and six RBIs, and sophomore designated hitter Connor Powell (Midlothian) had career-highs of two hits and three RBIs, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 16-12 non-conference baseball win past Grove City (PA) College on Saturday afternoon at the Joe Ferebee Classic in Misenheimer, North Carolina. Sophomore right-hander Colin Mabe (Alton) pitched 3.1 innings of middle relief with a career-high six strikeouts to earn the pitching victory, the first of his collegiate career, for the Tigers against the Wolverines in the neutral-site game. The Garnet & Grey improved to 2-1 on the season, completing their three games in two days at the classic hosted by Pfeiffer University, while GCC dropped to 1-1.

H-SC scored 16 runs on 17 hits with three errors … scoring one run in the first inning, three runs in the second, one run each in the third and fourth innings, three runs in the fifth, four runs in the sixth and three runs in the eighth. GCC, the Tigers' second-straight opponent that made a postseason NCAA Tournament Regional appearance in 2025 (31-13), scored 12 runs on 18 hits with three errors … scoring one run in the first inning, four runs in the third, one run each in the four and sixth innings and five runs in the eighth.

In the first, senior center fielder and team captain Jack Wilson (Petersburg) (3-4, RBI) reached on a one-out single, advanced to second base on a single by Powell (2-6, 3 RBIs), and both runners advanced a base when Howell (4-6, 6 RBIs) also singled to load the bases. Wilson crossed the plate via a sacrifice fly to center field by senior right fielder and team captain Greer Farr (Southern Shores, NC) (2-6, RBI) for the early 1-0 advantage.

In the second, junior catcher Noah Leonard (Troutville) (2-3, 2 RBIs) drew a one-out walk, advanced to second base on a wild pitch ahead of a walk to sophomore left fielder Sam Vick (Capron) (1-4, RBI) and both runners moved up when Wilson was hit by a pitch to once-again load the bases. Leonard scored when Powell was also hit by a pitch, and both Vick and Wilson crossed the plate via a two-run single to right field by Howell for a 4-1 lead.

In the third, sophomore second baseman Gavin Smith (Mechanicsville) (1-4) singled with one out, advanced to second and third bases, respectively, on wild pitches, and scored via a sacrifice fly to left field by Leonard for a 5-1 margin.

In the fourth, Wilson led off with a double to left field and advanced to third and later scored with one out via another wild pitch for a 6-5 advantage.

In the fifth, freshman third baseman Mason Lester (Lawrence, KS) walked to begin the at-bat, advanced to second base on a single by sophomore shortstop Kennen Lewis (Dry Fork) (2-6) and on to third when Smith reached on a fielder's choice. The bases were loaded yet again when Leonard walked and Lester scored via an RBI single to center field by Vick, and Smith crossed the plate when Wilson drew another walk with one out, before Leonard scored via a walk to Howell with two outs … giving the Tigers a 9-6 lead.

In the sixth, Lewis reached on a one-out single and advanced to third base when Smith reached on an error by the pitcher, scoring via an RBI single to right field by Leonard. Following a walk to Vick, Smith and Leonard crossed the plate on a two-run single to center field by Powell with two outs, and Vick scored via a run-scoring single to left field by Howell for a 13-6 advantage.

In the eighth, Wilson drew a one-out walk before Powell reached on an error at third base, and both runners scored via a two-run double to right field by Howell … who later scored on another wild pitch for a 16-7 lead.

Junior left-hander Adam Emhoff (Chesapeake) started on the mound for the Garnet & Grey and pitched the first 2.1 innings, allowing six hits and five runs, all earned, with three strikeouts and no walks. Mabe (1-0) tossed the next 3.1 innings of relief for his first college mound win, scattering four hits and two runs, both earned, with his career-high six strikeouts and two walks. Senior right-hander Jacob Williams (Chesapeake) followed with 1.2 innings, yielding six hits and four runs, all earned, with two strikeouts and no walks. Freshman right-hander Hayden Bynum (Richmond) pitched the final 1.2 innings, scattering two hits and one run, unearned, with one strikeout and one walk.

H-SC plays at home next weekend, February 20-22, hosting the H-SC Invitational on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. The Tigers are scheduled to play Muskingum (OH) University on Friday, Feb. 20, at 5 p.m., Wabash (IN) College on Saturday, Feb. 21, at 7 p.m. and Franklin & Marshall (PA) College on Sunday, Feb. 22, at 3 p.m.
