HAMDPEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Senior
Tyler Petz (Cary, NC) put the Tigers ahead in the first half and helped Hampden-Sydney College secure a 1-0 win in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action over Roanoke College on Saturday afternoon at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.
H-SC jumped out to the lead in the 14th minute, when senior
Jason Trujillo (North Lauderdale, FL) played in a cross from the left wing that the goalie dove and got a hand to, but pushed it right to Petz, who put it into an open net for the goal. The scoreline held to halftime, with senior
Daniel Beb (Woodbridge) making a save to keep the Maroons scoreless.
The Tigers' defense was the star of the second half, although the offense did have a good chance in the 64th minute that was pushed just wide to the right. After that shot, Beb came up big for H-SC, making three saves, including a save in the final minute of the game to help secure a 1-0 win.
Both sides took 10 shots in the game, with the Maroons having an edge in shots on target (4-3).
Beb made his first start of the season and made four saves to earn his first career shutout.
The Tigers will be back in action on Wednesday, October 14, when they play their final non-conference game at the University of Mary Washington against the Eagles. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Roy Gordon Field.
