DANVILLE, Va. -- Sophomore guard
Peter Moye (Charlotte, NC) scored 19 points, including seven in overtime, and senior forward
Shane Fernald (Charlotte, NC) added 18 points, but (RV)Hampden-Sydney College dropped a heartbreaking 84-82 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's basketball overtime decision on the road at Averett University on Friday evening in Danville. The visiting Tigers trailed 30-22 at halftime, before rallying from a nine-point deficit in the final minute of regulation, but Jackson Sellars scored the game-winning basket for the host Cougars with just seven-tenths of a second remaining in OT. H-SC dropped to 11-6 overall, 5-3 in the ODAC, while AU improved to 11-5 overall, 4-3 in the ODAC, led by Sellars with a game-high 24 points.

Caleb Kimbrough. "They made a lot of shots and we were a step or two slow defensively. I am proud of our fight to push it to OT. We didn't give up, but we have to learn to play with a certain level of intensity and focus all the time … and we will."

Santana Lynch (Dallas, TX) connected on a late jumper for a 30-22 halftime deficit. The Cougars made six three-pointers in the half.
H-SC tried battling back in the second half, closing to within six points on a couple of occasions at 32-26 with 17:35 remaining after a pair of baskets inside by Fernald and again at 48-42 with 11:48 left following a three-pointer from Radcliffe. It was an eight-point deficit at 53-45 after an old-fashioned three-point play by junior guard
William Britt (Richmond) at 8:15, but AU took their largest lead at 60-46 with 6:19 to go after a three-pointer by Sellars. The Tigers, however, weren't done yet as Fernald scored five-straight points, including an old-fashioned three-point play to close within 60-51 at 5:15, but the Cougars still led by double-figures at 69-57 with 2:54 remaining after a jumper by Sellars, and it was 72-63 at 1:03 following 1-2 free throws by the hosts. The Garnet & Grey, though, scored the final nine points of regulation to tie it at 72-72 and force the extra five minutes … getting a three-pointer from Moye at :54 before Lynch scored on three consecutive layups over the final 36-seconds … the first on an offensive rebound, the second on a steal and ensuing basket with 26-seconds left and the latter on a steal by Williams and the game-tying basket with 25-seconds on the clock. Following a turnover, the Tigers had the final possession but were unable to convert on two last-second shot attempts.
Moye opened the overtime with a three-pointer at 4:28, but a pair of layups by Isaiah Ramazani had AU ahead 76-75 with 2:36 remaining. Moye answered with a jumper at 2:11 for a 77-76 advantage, but Sellars converted a three-point play for a 79-77 lead with 1:50 on the clock, and a three-pointer by Timayahs Bracey had the Cougars in front 81-78 at 1:03. Moye added a layup with 42-seconds left to close within 81-80, but 1-2 free throws by Sellars made it 82-80 with 37-seconds on the clock. Fernald scored on an offensive rebound basket with 24-seconds left to tie it at 82-82, before Sellars scored the game-winner in the paint with just seven-tenths of a second on the clock.
Moye led H-SC with his 19 points, including seven in overtime, making 7-10 field goals (3-4 3FGs) and 2-2 free throws in 24 minutes off the bench, adding three rebounds and one steal. Fernald had his 18 points for the Tigers, adding five rebounds, one assist, one steal and one block. Lynch contributed his fifth double-double of the season (and his career) with 13 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, adding three assists and one steal. Stickney finished with a game-high eight assists. H-SC shot 49% (31-63) from the field, including 50% (6-12) on three-pointers, and 64% (14-22) at the free throw line. The Tigers had a 44-30 advantage in points scored in the paint, a 25-13 advantage in second-chance points with 20 offensive rebounds while outrebounding AU 43-24, and a 43-11 advantage in bench points.
Sellars led AU with his game-high 24 points, adding four assists and one steal. Mason Mitchell had 16 points for the Maroons, including 4-6 three-pointers, while Bracey and Tyler Stephens each finished with 15 points. AU shot 52% (32-62) from the field, including 41% (13-32) on three-pointers, and 58% (7-12) at the line.
H-SC returns home to play four-straight, and six of its last eight regular season games in the friendly confines of the new Tony Shaver Court in Diaz Arena at the renovated Kirby Field House. The Tigers are scheduled to welcome ODAC opponent Virginia Wesleyan University on Wednesday night, January 28, at 7 p.m. ... Garnet & Grey Night and the program's Coaches vs. Cancer contest in support of NABC and American Cancer Society efforts to increase cancer awareness and promote healthy living through year-round awareness efforts, fundraising activities and advocacy programs.
